Kathy Oney Carlson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 29, 2024.
Kathy passed away suddenly on July 12th while at home with her son, David Carlson, at her side. David had moved to Las Vegas after the death of his father so that she would not be alone.

Kathy was born in Kewanee, Henry County, Illinois. Growing up Kathy had the nickname of "KK". Her personality was of a quiet nature. She loved working in the house but hated outdoor chores. She loved to write stories and put together many backyard plays. She had a backyard neighborhood performance of a play she wrote called "Three Girls go to College." She excelled in school, and later attended Ricks College. She loved playing with girl things; dolls, make-up, and dressing up, and she loved suspenseful movies. She was a history buff and loved going to cemeteries to read headstones. Kathy was an avid photographer and genealogist. She spent 20 years researching family genealogy.

As she grew older, she became very interested in who was running for political offices. She only wanted politicians that promised relief to those who were poor and/or discriminated against. She was a staunch supporter of John F. Kennedy, and then later his brother Robert Kennedy. She was generous to those who did without.

Kathy was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served in callings in the Young Women's program. She was still in contact with some of those young girls who loved her. She also served as Relief Society President. She loved the ladies in her ward. She volunteered at shelters for day care children when her children were young. A hymn that describes Kathy is "Have I Done Any Good in the World Today?" This line especially describes Kathy's attitude: "Have I cheered up the sad, or made someone feel glad...if not I have failed indeed."

She was everyone's favorite Auntie, because she took an interest in them, made them laugh, and kept it light. She let them know that she loved her nieces and nephews. She was so fun and took so many photos of everyone. She loved being a grandma and was very proud of her sons. She sorely missed her husband and love of her life, Gary Lynn Carlson, who passed away 11 months earlier. He was her everything. They were just 27 days shy of being married partners for 49 years. We are so happy they are together now.

As a 20 yr old and after only 2 weeks in Utah, she was invited to climb Mt Timpanogos with her brother-in-law Scott. She was only wearing loafers. She made it to the top and had lots of blisters and eventually lost all her toenails, but said it was one of the highlights of her life. Kathy loved adventure and was always up for exploration when Gary would decide to take a detour on a road trip to Utah or Colorado.

She was proceeded in death by her husband, Gary Lynn Carlson, her sisters, Patricia Ann Oney (Haroldsen), Janice Kelly Oney (Oakden), brother Tyrus Raymond Oney, Jr., a nephew, William C. Oakden III, her mother Lilly Ellen Blair and her father Tyrus Raymond Oney. She is survived by David Carlson (son), Daniel Hayden Carlson (son and his wife Carolina), one sister, Candieth Guymon (Kelly), sisters-in-law Janice Robinson (Clyde), Carolyn Keller (Jon), Jean Carlson, 5 grandchildren, Maximiliano, Jose, Orlando, Naomi, Cayden, and 24 nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held August 10th in Provo at 11 am at the LDS chapel located at 3050 Mojave Lane, Provo UT 84604. Lunch will be served after the service.

Kathy and I recently had the most competitive game of Scrabble in my entire life. We filled the board and it got tense! She was super-fun and loved to laugh. Will miss you Kathy.

Kathy and I both volunteered as candy stripers at St Anthony's hospital in Rockford Illinois Kathy had been volunteering for about 2 years when I started and so she trained me. When it came my turn to volunteer on my own without Kathy I was assigned to the cafe and would take orders from the people and then take them there food Kathy told me of a lady that would come in who was deaf and had a hard time speaking and she had built a relationship with this patron and would always help her order her food and then take it to her. So the lady came in while I was working and I looked at her and could kind of figure out she was with Kathy had talked to me about and so I went over and asked her what she wanted to eat and of course she couldn't communicate finally she made a emotion of writing, so I gave her a pencil and she told me what she wanted to eat. Well she was so used to Kathy taking care of her that she became very frustrated and almost left and then I understood her order and was able to get it for her and take it to her. I waited on her several times after that however she made it known that she preferred Kathy and the service she gave instead of me. I told the lady I was Kathy's sister and she looked shocked like how come you didn't take care of me better. When I got off that night I asked Kathy what she did that gained so much favor in this woman's sight and she said I don't know but she's been coming every week since I started volunteering and even though we can't verbally communicate, so we write napkins to each other, sometimes they're about her order and sometimes they were about her life but she's a great lady just treat her with kindness.
I just know that lady loved Kathy . As children we loved to pretend we were from foreign countries.
So we would start talking gibberish...at the store, on the bus, everywhere. Sometimes people would try to help us and we would just continue on. Kathy was fun and lives life well i will miss her so much, she,Pat and Kelly have etched on my heart a love for the word "sister".

Kathy was always so fun. At our reunions she was the first to get her feet wet, play games with the nieces and nephews, and pose everyone for a fun photo. In her later years she was so patient with her health struggles and did not complain.
