Kay Smith Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 24, 2015.
It is with great sorrow that we announce the death of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend. Kay died peacefully at The Hospice of East Texas HomePlace on June 22, 2015, after a short, valiant battle with cancer.

Kay was loved by her son, Monty Smith and wife Nicole, of Whitehouse; daughter, Kelly Hitt and husband Mike, of Arp; son, Brandon Smith and wife Heather, of Gresham; grandchildren, Michael Smith, Brittany Davis, Cameron Smith, Kelsey Hanson, Peyton Moore, Chris Hitt, Chad Hitt and wife Courtney, Courtney Dell Hitt, Sharon McNeese, Kristen Saylors and Matt Smith; stepson, Matt Smith and wife Tracy, of Chander; 12 great-grandchildren; sisters, Pat Huckabay and Sandy Teel, of Spring, and Kathy Tinney, of Pearland; aunt, Ruth Young and husband Donald; and many nieces and nephews. We will cherish our memories forever.

Kay was born in Houston to Horace and Mildred Stevens on Dec. 18, 1943. In 1978, she moved to Tyler to be close to her parents. She ran the family business, Shop and Save, in Chapel Hill for many years. She attended Green Acres Baptist Church South.

After the store sold, she decided to go back to work. Kay enjoyed several years with Brookshire's. She especially enjoyed her years at the Wildlife Museum and the friends she made there.

Kay was preceded in death by her father and mother. Additionally, she was preceded by her sister, Sue LaField; stepfather, Charles Tinney; and daughter-in-law, Tamy Smith.

The family would like to express our sincere appreciation for the love and kindness shown to us during the last three weeks. Granny Smith, as she was affectionately known to many, will be in our hearts forever. We love you, Mom!

Granny was blessed with a special great-grandson, Kamden McHenry, who was the light of her life. Kay loved her children and family fiercely. We will honor her request for a time of visitation to celebrate her life from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 24, 2015, at Stewart Family Funeral Home, 7525 Old Jacksonville Highway, Tyler, 75703.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Hospice of East Texas Foundation, 4111 University Blvd., Tyler, 75701.
