Kayvan Khiabani Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 26 to Apr. 27, 2017.
Kayvan Khiabani September 7, 1965 - April 18, 2017 Kayvan Taghipour Khiabani, age 51, passed away April 18, 2017. He was born Sept. 7, 1965, in Tehran, Iran, to his adoring parents. As a teenager, Kayvan came to Canada as a refugee, where he completed his undergraduate degree in medicine at McGill University. There, he met his wife and soulmate, Katy Barin, with whom he would happily spend the next 26 years of his life. Their loving union resulted in the births of his two sons, Aria (16) and Keon (13), whose many achievements and successes afforded Kayvan no greater pleasure in life. To his friends and family, Kayvan was one of a kind. He forged countless friendships and was a mentor and confidant to many. He lived life to the fullest, was an aficionado of the opera and classical music and enjoyed smoking fine cigars, traveling, watching movies, cycling and practicing yoga. To others in the Nevada community, Kayvan was best known as Dr. Khiabani, a passionate reconstructive plastic surgeon who used his intellect and steady hands to heal his patients. He completed his residency in plastic surgery at McGill University and a fellowship in hand and microsurgery at UCLA and the University of Nevada, Reno. He was board certified in plastic and reconstructive surgery in both the United States and Canada, and had an extensive research background in reconstructive and microsurgery with a Masters of Science degree in experimental surgery. He was a member of many prestigious surgical societies, and was actively involved in teaching many continuing medical education courses in reconstructive and hand surgery. During his 51 years on this Earth, Dr. Khiabani saved countless lives and touched many more hearts. He is survived by his devoted wife, Katy; his parents, Ali and Touran Taghipour Khiabani; and his sister, Kathy Taghipour Khiabani. His spirit, strength of character and generosity forever lives on in the lives of his sons, Aria and Keon.

Dr. Khiabani's life will be celebrated at a ceremony at Mount Royal Funeral Complex 1297 Chemin de la Forêt, Outremont, Quebec H2V 2P9 on Saturday, April 29, at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the USC Norris Cancer Center in Dr. Khiabani's memory.

His name came up just two days ago! He was an amazing human and ever better surgeon. Our daughter needed badly his humor and bedside manner.
Her hospital stay was long, but her follow ups with him were fun.
I often wonder how his sons are doing.
Their family has seen so much loss.
Dr Khiabani must have amazing children.

Even after 3 years of his passing which was a great tragedy we all still miss him deeply , I remember that every patient that I referred to him for a surgical consultation had nothing but good things to say about him, he had great knowledge ,the best bedside manners and was a real caring physician, I also went to his office for an issue in my hand and was amazed by his expertise and his kindness. He will never be forgotten.

My prayers and thoughts are with the family, friends and all those who he treated.
I was due to have surgery this year by Dr. Khiabani but was not able to get though to him on the phone, and today I found out why. I only saw him twice but instantly he made me fell at ease. I once jokingly told him "Hey you're not only a good doctor; but you smell great too." He and his staff just smiled.

God's blessings be unto you all. Shalom

I met Dr. Khiabani April 3rd 2016 right after I was stabbed and diagnosed with radial & median nerve injury, & Right of hand he was the most generous, kind, gentle soul who took all my fear away, He assured me he would get my right arm better but it would take time, he performed my first surgery, so scared to have to go thru it, I remember him walking into the pre-op room before surgery telling me to relax, I got you... I am deeply saddened by this loss and my condolences goes out to his family, God has called another one of his angels home

Dr. Khiabani saved my life and my right hand after a car accident. I was in the surgery for nine hours and he saved my hand. What a great man, what a great surgeon. I will never forget him and how can I ? Every time I look at or use my right hand I remember Dr.Khiabani and his wonderful smile. Rest in peace.

I offer my sincere, heartfelt condolences to the family & staff of Dr. Khiabani.

Dr Khiabani was MY Doctor , and I'm sure many of his patients felt that way. He was genuinely kind. I felt "safe" each time he performed surgery on me; carpal tunnel surgery on both of my hands, dequervains syndrome surgery on my left thumb.
I always felt important at my Dr visits. He made me feel like "it was all about me", lol.
Dr Khiabani performed my breast reduction surgery, and on the day of my surgery, he assured me & my daughters that he was going to "take care of me as if I was his own family member". Dr. Khiabani gave me "quality of life", and for that I am forever grateful.
Rest In Peace Dr. Khiabani

It is with deepest sadness that we have learned of this tragedy. Kayvan was a hand surgery fellow at UCLA, where we spent countless hours together. He was a wonderful surgeon, but more importantly a truly genuine, empathetic, and deeply caring person. He had a heart of gold, a smile that would light up a room, and a happy outlook on life that was infectious. It was immediately evident to anyone who met him that he was the kind of person that you would want to know for the rest of your life. We were blessed to have spent some time with him, time that I will always treasure. On behalf of the entire UCLA family, our most sincere condolences go out to Katy and family.

Dr. Khiabani not only helped people with hand reconstruction, I speak on behalf of the many people he helped get their lives back performing his migraine headache surgery. I am devastated that this man who gave so much and had so much more to give was taken way too soon. For those of us who he helped with our migraine surgeries, thank you Dr. Khiabani. Your work remains alive in the many people you helped.

I am so sorry to the friends and family of this wonderful man. I was a patient of this fantastic surgeon. I didn't know him well, but in the short conversations we had in my office visits, we often spoke about art. He told me that it was on his bucket list to travel the world and see the paintings of Gustav Klimt. This inspired me to paint a colorful abstract accented with gold. It was a picture representing me in my world after being diagnosed with cancer. I showed it to him on my next visit. Of course he had only compliments for my inspiration.
Dr. Khiabani, I hope the Heavens surround you with the songs of the greatest Operas, and the works of Klimt have come to life!

I just referred one of my patient to him since the patient was on one of the show in Vegas.

We met Dr Khiabani in 2005 after our daughter, Mallory was hit in a head on car collision two weeks before her high school graduation. He reconstructed her right foot performing a delicate, rare procedure.
Our visits with him were special. Mallory and he shared tastes in comedy and some music. She was always interested to see what he was wearing and how great he smelled. He talked about Lego Land trips with the boys and was a bright visit when things were dark. Later when Mallory decided to have an amputation of that same foot, Dr. Khiabani was there. Two years later I saw him and he'd been getting into shape and looked even happier and fit.
We are so saddened to hear of his untimely death. Our thoughts are with his family and friends and staff who must be feeling an enormous void with his passing. Our family will always be greatful to those that supported him in his education and life. He touched our family's lives' so deeply.

Kayvan and I met when we were 14 years old. We became best of friends immediately and then decided to start a music band. He became Paul MacCartney and I , John Lennon; he was Barry Gibb and I, Robin; he became David Gilmour and I, Roger Waters. We then took music lessons to reach our goals, the band "Human Beast" was born and that was the start of my music life. A life that I hold dearly, mainly based on his encouragement. God bless you Kayvan, may heavens bells ring for you.

My deepest and sincerest condolences to the entire family. Dr Khiabani saved my fingers a year ago April 21, 2017 I had surgery. I was told I would never make a fist again. As most of you knew he refused to allow that to happen. I regained 98% of function back in my fingers and i can now make a fist because he cared. Dr Khiabani was extremely kind and and most of all he cared about every single human being. I'm so honored to have known him for such a short time. In my mind, heart and soul he will always be my true hero, the world's hero.. Thank you Dr Khiabani for the kindness and miracles you sprinkled upon our world. Every time I look down to use my fingers you will be thought of. I'm praying for the entire family. My heart aches for you all. May you find peace and comfort during this time. Dr K, you will truly be missed forever. ♡God Bless♡

So unreal! Dr. Khiabani was one of a kind. He was such a passionate doctor. He was the best in what he does. My heart aches for his wife and kids. May their sorrow be lighter by the love of family and friends that surrounds, and support them. I am still in denial, about his untimely passing. Dr.Khiabani has been an excellent doctor to me. I am a work in progress for Dr. Khiabani. I will forever remember his kind words every time he see me "I'M JUST GETTING STARTED" these words gave me confidence, hope, and life. This is a huge loss to his family, patients, friends and just about everyone who knows this genuine MAN!! He was a people's person. Amazing bedside manners. Treated everyone with respect. Never too busy to listen to his patients. Always have answers to whatever the questions or concerns may be. Always smiling. There was never a dull moment seeing this doctor. Dr.Khiabani you are appreciated more than you will ever know...May your soul rest in eternal peace.

Within 2 seconds of meeting Dr. Khiabani - I loved him, and each visit with him made me love him and respect him even more. My husband attended as many visits with me as he could because he so looked forward to visiting with Dr. K for a few minutes. He always called him Dr. Awesome and then we would get to see that million dollar smile.

I actually looked forward to going to all of my appointments because I knew I would leave happier than I was when I arrived. His uplifting spirit and positive attitude were incredible to experience.

Dr. Khiabani not only made going thru a bad experience tolerable - he made it fun.

May his wife and children find comfort knowing that this man helped so many.

With much love and respect,
