Keela Scott Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 9, 2025.
It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dr. Keela Scott, a beloved daughter, granddaughter, sister, niece, cousin, colleague, and friend, who left us on July 2nd, 2025.

Born on April 4, 1991, Keela was a remarkable individual who touched the lives of everyone she encountered.

A 2009 graduate of Liberty High School, Keela was honored as the Valedictorian of her class and then went on to play collegiate softball. Her journey continued at the University of Missouri-Kansas City graduating summa cum laude and receiving the prestigious Vice Chancellor's Honor Award for her outstanding academic achievements. While at UMKC, she was a Teacher's Assistant in Organic Chemistry. She enjoyed helping others excel academically.

Keela graduated Medical School from the University of Missouri with honors, and then continued on as a Pathology Resident where she was appointed Chief Pathology Resident for 2024-2025. Keela's academic accomplishments included many publications and national presentations, as well as the "Excellence in Research" award in 2023 presented to her by the Missouri Society of Pathologists.

Keela was accepted into the prestigious Gastrointestinal Pathology Fellowship at Brigham and Women's Hospital of Harvard University.

Keela was admired for her humility, sense of humor, and unshakable support for her peers. She cherished her yellow Labrador, Luna (Yellow Dog, Smoosh, Stinky, Tuner, Tink-Tink, Looney Tune, Luna Moon). Keela enjoyed working out and making pies for any occasion. She loved spending time outdoors, mushroom hunting, and riding in her jeep with the top down and the base up. Keela adored her family and friends and was proud to be a new aunt.

She is survived by her beloved father, Matthew Scott; mother, Natalie Scott; brother, Taylor Scott; sister-in-law, Emmi Scott; and nephew, Mason; as well as all of her grandparents and cousins.

A celebration of her life will be held on August 9th, 2025 from 12 PM. to 2:30 PM at Corbin Mills located at 131 S. Water Street Liberty, MO 64068, where family, friends, and colleagues will gather to honor her memory. All are welcomed to share stories and memories about her. Keela was such a lifeline for me in college. I never would have passed (much less aced) organic chem or histology without her. Having her as my TA opened the door to being able to get to know her and hang out with her outside of school. She always made me laugh, always was down for a fun night out or a concert, but also always there to study or chill. Keela was magnetic. She became fast friends with all my roommates and we will never forget her. She truly always brought the energy and excitement and joy everywhere she went. I´m speechless to hear of her passing. I have not been able to stop thinking about her family since I found out. You could see where Keela got her joy from if you ever had the chance to meet her family.
I´ll never be able to forget Keela. Any time I think or her or she comes up in memories, she makes me smile and laugh at all the good times.
Hugs to her family and loved ones. I´ll be thinking of you. She made her mark on so many people while she was here. She will be missed so so much.

It's hard to find the words to commemorate Keela. She is part of so many of my fondest memories. It was a privilege to have coached her, but even moreso to have known her. Passion, integrity, grit, determination, brilliance. And also joy, laughter, humor. Keela's smile lit up those around her. I'm so sad the world only got her for a short time. But I know she made the most of it, and those of us who knew her and loved her will keep her with us always. -Coach Junge

I am so deeply saddened to hear of Keela´s passing. My heart is breaking for everyone who knew her and loved her. I have worked with Keela at Ellis Fischel in tumor boards and enjoyed her so much. Her professionalism and knowledge was stellar. We shared many laughs and she always had a smile on her face. I will always remember her kindness. God bless you Keela.

Keela, our hearts are broken since your early departure
Ever since you left, I wish for time´s rewind aperture
Even though you're gone, your kind imprints will never fade
Loved by all, in every smile and memory made
And until we meet again, in our hearts you will remain

Keela was someone you automatically respected just by the way she carried herself. She was passionate and tenacious both on the field and in life. It is impossible to think about my high school experience without thinking about her. From summer ball to school ball we shared so many memories on the field and traveling to tournaments. I'm so grateful we were on the same team for so many yeas. Her talent and work ethic challenged me to be better.

Keela had a deep commitment to the pursuit of knowledge. To do this, one must be driven by curiosity, a desire to understand the world and a willingness to contribute to the advancement of scientific knowledge. She lead research into spinal ependymoma, amelanotic melanomas, cryptococcal meningitis, hepatocellular, renal cell and ovarian serous carcinoma. These are just a few of her many rigorous academic pursuits all of which required a blend of passion, discipline and a wiliness to embrace both successes and setbacks. Keela suffered from Crohn´s, an inflammatory bowel condition which manifested in flare-ups that caused her terrible pain, often at times when she was preparing for another scholastic milestone. Her generous gift of organ and tissue donation and her study of biology and the human condition through the lens of her microscope will contribute to the lives of many. I am so sorry, Matthew and Sister. So, so sorry for the sorrow you endure. I know you are not okay but everything is going to be alright. I love you and always thinking of you xxx

Truly a million memories... Keela was not only my resident but also someone I held close as a friend, and a mentee. Over the four years we shared, I watched her navigate challenges with quiet strength, care deeply for her patients and colleagues, and grow into a compassionate and capable physician. She had a lovely sense of humor, a gentle soul, a sharp mind, and a heart full of integrity.

Her passing has left a void that words cannot fill, but her memory will live on in the many lives she touched - including mine. I miss her deeply, and I will carry her with me always.

Growing up around Keela was a privilege that left me with alot of fond memories of her and the rest of the Scott family that I'll always cherish. Sending love and comfort to everyone reminiscing and missing her today and every day to come.

I worked in the pathology office at MU during the 2022-2023 year. I got to know Keela and worked with her, pulling slides when she needed them for cases. My desk was right next to the microwaves, so we would always talk about the interesting and healthy lunches she brought. I will make a plate of zucchini lasagna in memory of her. Following my departure from pathology, I would see Keela quite often in the hallways - messy top knot bun, scrubs, and a crooked smile and a greeting - "Hey, Lauryn!". I always enjoyed seeing her and she was always so kind, friendly, and respectful. In April of this year, the last thing she said to me - while taking an elevator up during a tornado warning - was, "I'll be alright". Bless Keela. Sending Keela's family lots of love and prayers of comfort. She is missed.

I had so much joy in coaching Keela in softball, she was a very determined and impressive talent. She was always making it fun until it was time to be serious, she was the one that was always like I got this coach. Such a good kid and a very special student as well. RIP my friend....

Keela was the consummate over achiever. My fondest memory when, as young adults Keela, Taylor and cousin Tyler came over to each make a different pie. She must have gotten bit by the pie bug because last Thanksgiving she made 5 different pies!
She grabbed everything life offers with the same zeal.
I say with a heavy heart, she will truly be missed.

Keela was the light in every room. Her charm drew people closer, her positive attitude and empathy always made you feel accepted, and her laugh would put a smile on your face even if you didn´t know why she was laughing. I grieve for the Scott family, and my friend who worked so hard to be the best daughter, sister and friend anyone could ask for. Keela was irreplaceable on this earth, but I´m happy to have known her, and to know she´s now resting in a place of peace and love. Love you forever my sis TKDK for life
