MACRANDER, Dr. Hans
July 20, 1923 – February 19, 2016
Hans passed away on February 19 after a brief struggle with an unexpected illness. Hans was a doctor in Surrey for many years until he retired in 1998. Talented in both science and art, he had a great respect for the mystery of life and had a true compassion for those around him. An avid lover of nature and the outdoors he lived his life to the fullest completing his last 9 km hike just weeks before illness took over. An enthusiastic sailor, he had many adventures on Mr. Duck exploring the B.C. coast. Hans had a deep appreciation for music and art and was skilled in both piano and painting. Hans will be much missed by Jackie, his wife of 47 years and his daughters Catharine, Simone and Mariette. He will also be sadly missed by his young grandchildren Kaila and Max who spent many hours in his company on day trips exploring parks, trails and other local venues. A celebration of Hans' life will be held at his home in Surrey, Saturday, March 12, beginning at 2:30 p.m. Those who knew him are invited. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Peace Arch Hospice (www.pahfoundation.ca).

Dr Macrander was my doctor for many years, he watched me grow from a 6 years old to my early 20's, until he retired. It was a shock as he came into my work one night with his daughter, for dinner, as I was organizing a wait list at the door, he walked up and said, "2 for Macrander", as I looked up thinking "Macrander?" My heart stopped and it was like I just saw an old friend after 20 something years. I am not sure if he remembered me all that well but he did remember my parents. Dr. Macrander was not just a doctor, he was someone that left a lasting impression in a young boys life and not so young now, I will always remember him. My condolences to his family, he was truly a great doctor and even a better person.
