I'm so saddened to hear of Dick's passing.I got to know Dick through the JHS alumni homecomings in Jellico over the years. He was always one that would support his roots in our association. RIP dear friend.

My sympathies go out to all the Davenport family and especially Nancy. I know what an icon he was not only in the optical industry, but also in Charleston. Sending prayers to everyone.

Dick was a very special member of the Ellison Family. We so enjoyed our last visit with him, going though his old family photos and listening to his stories of growing up in Jelllico and family history. He was so gracious to share this afternoon reminiscing. We will miss him.

On assignment in September, 2019 covering Hurricane Doriam for NBC NY

We first met when I was on assignment covering hurricane Floyd 20 years ago and last saw each other when I was covering hurricane Dorian one month ago. Perfect capstone to truly one of the most amazing men I have ever met.
Dick took my crew and me in during Floyd when there were no rooms left in the Lowcountry and then threw a hurricane party for us on his rooftop overlooking Rainbow Row after Floyd had passed.
He was the consummate Southern, and Northern, and Eastern, and Midwestern, and Western gentleman.
And on this last trip, I heard one more time what he did at Woolworths, something I will never forget.
Dick, I can hear God now, We've got a room waiting for you.

We met Dick several years ago at Jaye and Randy Wolfe's house before a U.T. football game. He was so entertaining. He made a big impression as he dominated the party atmosphere. I am so sorry for your lost. I can only imagine what hole he will leave in your heart.

Dear Family,

I remember Dick as my parents business was next door to Woolworths - he was such a nice person and so smart. I was sorry to read this -- I know he will be missed by so many people. Everyone adored him.
