Kenneth HUTCHINSON Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 20, 2018.
HUTCHINSON, Kenneth Hewitson (AAA, FRAIC)
February 24, 1944 – April 14, 2018

It is with deep sadness that the family announces the peaceful passing of Ken Hutchinson in Calgary at the age of 74 years. Ken was a man of passion – he followed his dreams and encouraged everyone around him to do the same. He was dedicated to his family, was an inspiration to his children and many others, and lived with a sense of cause and loyalty in both his personal and professional life. He found joy in painting, sailing, music of all kinds and vintage cars, especially his 1966 Mustang convertible.
He is survived by his wife Janny, his daughter Keesa, son-in-law David and granddaughters Kyra and Leia, his son Kodi and daughter-in-law Stephanie and new granddaughter Avery, his brother Ralph and his wife Janet, and his sister Wendy and her husband Ron, many nephews and nieces and extended family. Ken was predeceased by his parents Kenneth and Marion, and sister Marilyn Tinis.
One of Western Canada's most prominent architects, Ken contributed to the cultural landscape of the region, designing numerous iconic buildings such as the innovative Westside Recreation Centre, the Calgary Real Estate Board headquarters, the beautiful MacKenzie Towne Fire Hall, and the project closest to his heart, the Hobbema Healing Lodge (PêSâkâstêw Centre). He was a Paul Harris Fellow, Past-President and Lifetime Member of the Alberta Association of Architects (AAA) and was inducted into the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) in 2010. He had the uncanny ability to bring stakeholders of all sides together to create buildings that combined both art and function.
He was also an avid member of the Rotary Clubs of Calgary and Cochrane, and founding member of the Cochrane Classics Car Club, having volunteered countless hours over the years. He was a staunch defender of the rights of the marginalized.
Ken will be remembered not only for his exceptional professional contributions that have impacted so many lives, but also his unending sense of humour and 'glass half full' outlook on life.
A memorial will be held 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 24 at Eden Brook Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home, 24223 Township Road 242, Calgary AB T3Z 3K2. To share memories and condolences, please visit: www.arbormemorial.ca/obituaries
If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Cochrane Society for Housing Options; (403-851-2261) Box 2035, Cochrane, Alberta T4C 1B8 or to the Bethany Care Foundation (www.bethanycarefoundation.com).

Very Shocked to hear of Ken's passing. I knew Ken on and off over the years as we worked on projects with Alberta Public Works. I had more contact in those days with Dave Illsey (Medicine Hat Jail). But whenever a commrade was ill or passed away, I would run into Ken and/or Dave at the event and was invited for a coffee or a lunch. Condolenscences to the family and may Ken keep on creating on the road ahead.

Found the CBC report on Yahoo news about his passing and my comment.

What a personal shock to me, ken was a sailing buddy from way back, on lake Windemere. A few great memories from back in the eighties, crewing on his Osprey. Rest in peace Buddy your sailing passion really rubbed off on me, even after I got tossed overboard in chilly 15C water on a windy Saturday afternoon in June, back in about 1986 or seven.
Ken for what ever it is worth from up there, still sailing hard and a shelf full of trophies as memories. A life lesson learned, you got to drop a few times, only to get back up and now with a lot more passion & effort. My sincere condolences to the family.

Ken and I met in our 1st year university at UofA and soon found we were both set on getting our B.Arch at UBC. We became friends and shared most of the major events in our lives over the years - weddings, family, ups and downs. Ken had a wonderful sense of joy in life and was very creative. We were good friends for over 55 years. He will be missed.
