Kenneth McGrory, MD Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 13, 2025.
Kenneth Robert McGrory, MD (Ken), age 70, passed away on January 3, 2025, after a courageous battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. He is survived by his brother, Edward Joseph McGrory, Jr. MD, and his sister-in-law, Carol Durrell of Raleigh, NC. He is also survived by cherished friends, several of whom visited during his last weeks to laugh, reminisce and provide support. He was preceded in death by his father, Edward Joseph McGrory, Sr. and his mother, Josephine (Jo) McGrory.

Ken was born in Providence, Rhode Island. He moved to Charleston, South Carolina with his parents where he graduated from high school. He graduated from the College of Charleston in 1976. Then, he went on to the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston, SC from which he graduated in 1980. After medical school, he moved to New Orleans, Louisiana to complete his internship at Charity Hospital. He relocated to Atlanta in 1981, and began his career as an emergency physician, working in urgent care centers in the Atlanta metro area. In 1988, he moved to Salt Lake City to continue his work in urgent care centers and emergency rooms, and to pursue his passion for skiing on a more regular basis. He moved to Park City, Utah in 1992. After about 30 years working in urgent care medicine, he worked for Pharmacy Benefit Management companies, such as RX America and Caremark. The last few years, he consulted with a union plan, as a Formulary Committee member.

Ken always had a passion for sports. He played tennis in high school and college. He also loved to ski and did so on as many days a week as he could fit in after he moved to Utah. During the summers he cycled on Park City's beautiful trails and often went camping in nearby national parks. He also loved watching sports, especially college and professional football and basketball. He lived life every day.

Ken's family would like to thank the compassionate physicians, nurses and other staff who treated him at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah, and at Duke University Hospital in Durham, North Carolina and at Duke Raleigh. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to The Leukemia And Lymphoma Society (LLS.org).

Having worked with Ken for years in urgent care, then following him as a friend during his stint with the movie industry and back to medicine, Ken was always kind to everyone who crossed his path professionally or personally. He had great love for his family and later, during his years of struggling with his own illness, he always maintained a positive attitude even when he knew it was an uphill battle. I have no doubt that he helped many, inspired others, and continues to love his family.

I am so sorry to hear this news. I knew Ken from Lanier Park Hospital and dated him off and on for a couple of years. My mom loved him dearly! I am so very sorry for your loss!
