Kenneth Moffet Obituary
Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 24, 2025.
Kenneth L. Moffet was born December 20, 1931. His life was a testament to the power of education, faith, an immutable moral compass, and the driving force of a big idea. This is the legacy he leaves to his family.
Ken was raised in Barney, North Dakota on a family farm. His education began in his township's schoolhouse and led him to Grinnell College and Southern Methodist University where he earned a degree in Finance.
As a child, he showed the first signs of his talents as a businessman. The gift of a lamb became the basis for his college fund, and Ken grew the small flock over time to fund much of his education. He attended SMU on an ROTC scholarship and joined the Air Force after graduation, fulfilling a childhood dream to fly. In the mid '50s, he was stationed at Carswell Air Force Base in Fort Worth, Texas, piloting a B-36 for the Strategic Air Command.
He met the love of his love, Sue Wayman, at a bridge game while stationed at Carswell. They were married 67 years, raising four children in Texas and Colorado. After retirement, they spent 5 years on a farm in eastern Virginia, expanding their network of lifetime friendships.
Ken enjoyed a career as an institutional investor for over forty years. He served in leadership roles within the trust departments at banks in Dallas and Denver before starting his own asset management firm in 1978. His proudest professional highlight is two sons who follow in his footsteps and manage the firm he founded 47 years ago.
Over the last 25 years, Ken and Sue doubled down on their Dallas roots, returning to their core group of friends from early married life. He loved his years volunteering at the Frontiers of Flight Museum, Dallas Arboretum, and Scottish Rite Hospital...with a special talent for managing the popcorn machine and serving as Santa. He was a member of Highland Park United Methodist Church and the Wesleyan Fellowship Sunday School class.
He lived his life with the unshakeable belief that character counts more than any material possession. He was a quiet man of simple pleasures and a love for travel to Bermuda. His joy came from his faith, family and a small circle of lifetime friends. Ken also enjoyed a mechanical challenge. One of his favorite projects was the restoration of a 1959 Jaguar Mark I Saloon, completed in his home garage. His passion for flying continued beyond the Air Force with many satisfying hours behind the yokes of private aircraft, and he especially loved his Beech Baron. While mostly shy and reserved, he was ready to talk about airplanes anytime, anywhere and with anyone.
Ken was preceded in death by his parents, Corwin and Margaret Moffet and sister, Marilyn Moffet Pfeifer. He is survived by his loving wife, Sue; brothers Duren and Donald; his four children Ken (Sandra), John (Stacey), Angela, and Elizabeth; and his beloved grandchildren Abbey, Hanna, Audrey, and Kenny. The family will celebrate Ken's life and legacy on April 3rd in the Cox Chapel at Highland Park United Methodist Church at 10 AM. They would like to give special thanks to the staff of Terrace House and Belmont Village for their loving support in his last years. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to Scottish Rite Hospital.
