Kenneth Powers Obituary

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Kenneth Winfred Powers Sr., 96, of West Palm Beach and Osterville, and native of Little Deer Isle, Maine, died at his home in West Palm Beach on May 11, 2009.

Born on Little Deer Isle on Oct. 27, 1912, the son of Edwin L. and Flossie (Campbell) Powers, he spent most of his life on the water, starting as a young man. He worked on several jobs, advancing his way up to captain on the private M.Y. TOPSAL, hailing from Osterville and Palm Beach.

During World War II, he was employed by ELCO Boat Co., building and testing PT boats for the U.S. Coast Guard of New York. He had a long career, not retiring until his 80s.

He is survived by his son, Robert W. Powers of Osterville and West Palm Beach; sister, Bea Gray of Camden, Maine; sisters-in-law, Beryl Powers of Little Deer Isle, and Mary Cousins of Stonington, Maine; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; wife of 67 years, Marguerite Wallace Powers; son, Kenneth W. Powers Jr. of Atlanta, Ga.; sister, Elizabeth Arnold of Bangor, Maine; two brothers, young Jasper in 1924, and John E. Powers, both of Little Deer Isle.

Interment at Gray's Hill Cemetery, Little Deer Isle, will be announced at a later date this summer.

Contributions in his memory may be made to "Save Our Sound" (Nantucket), 4 Barnstable Road, Hyannis, MA 02601, the American Cancer Society, or a charity of one's choice.

Arrangements are by the "Neptune Society."
