Kenneth R. Treat

TREAT, KENNETH R. Kenneth R. Treat passed away on May 3, 2009, from Parkinson's disease. Born on September 7, 1930, in Philadelphia, the son of Mary and Harold Treat. Known as "Ken," he studied theology at Hobart College in New York, earning a bachelor's degree in 1952. He was ordained in 1955 after graduating from General Seminary and he earned a master's in theology from the University of the South in 1968. He married Dorothy Anne Hodge on September 10, 1955, at St. Luke's Chapel in New York, NY. In addition to his wife, he is survived by their three children: Robert Treat, Catherine Melick and Elizabeth Castagnera. He is also survived by a niece, Andrea Wistar, and one grandson, William Joseph Treat. He served parishes in Florida and Pennsylvania as well as being a chaplain in the U.S. Air Force before coming to San Diego where he served as the headmaster at All Saints' School from 1970 to 1974. He had a successful 22-year ministry at St. Alban's Episcopal Church in El Cajon. He was made an honorary canon at St. Paul's Cathedral in 1991. He served the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego as ecumenical officer for 30 years, from 1975 until 2005. "Ken Treat was one of the kindest, most faithful clergymen it's been my privilege to know," said the Rt. Rev. Gethin Hughes, former bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego. "His sweetness was particularly evident in the area of ecumenical relations. We could have had no better ambassador for the Episcopal Church than to have had Canon Treat representing us at meetings and gatherings." One of his greatest achievements was engineering the Covenant between the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego and the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego in 1994. He will be remembered by his family for his incredible devotion towards them as well as his sense of humor. The family thanks the compassionate and skilled staff at Arbor Hills Nursing Home in La Mesa. A Funeral Service will be on Saturday, May 9th, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Alban's Episcopal Church in El Cajon. Bishop Mathes will officiate. There will be a reception following the service.
