Kent D. Habeger
Sept. 12, 1958 - Dec. 8, 2008

BURT - A funeral service for Kent D. Habeger, 50, of Burt was held Friday, Dec. 12, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, Algona, with Reverend Glenn Wilson officiating. Burial was in Fenton Township Cemetery, rural Lone Rock.

Kent Duane Habeger was born Sept. 12, 1958, in Algona, a son of Duane and Shirley (Mitchell) Habeger. He grew up on the family farm near Burt where he and his family continue to reside specializing in the production of show cattle.

He graduated from Burt High School in 1976 and then graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in farm operations with an emphasis on animal science.

Kent was united in marriage to Marti Noll on Nov. 26, 1983, recently celebrating 25 years of marriage. Kent had a special appreciation for "High Quality" cattle. He proudly farmed along side his father, Duane, for over 30 years and along with their boys, he and Marti also developed Habeger Show Cattle.

Through this business, he met and influenced many people all over the country and was proud of the many championships that were accomplished with these relationships. Kent judged numerous cattle shows from the local to the national level in several states including the Fall Classic, the Belt Buckle Bonanza, the American Royal, the NAILE, and was looking forward to judging at the National Western in Denver this January.

Proud of both his sons, Kent loved helping Ryan with his livestock show career and he loved helping Mitchell pursue his passion of restoring antique machinery. He enjoyed working with and mentoring young people. He was an active member of the Burt Presbyterian Church serving as Trustee and served as Burt Township Trustee for 15 years. Kent was an avid Iowa State fan. Kent had a great sense of humor and shared many a practical joke over the years with family and friends.

Kent D. Habeger died Monday, December 8, 2008 as a result of a farm accident. He was 50.

He is survived by his wife, Marti and their two sons, Ryan and Mitchell; his parents, Duane and Shirley Habeger of Algona; his parents-in-law, Darrell and Carolyn Noll of Spencer; three sisters, Kirsten Strack and her husband, Bill, of Pocahontas, Sandy Evan and her husband, Tim, of Byron, Minn., and Lori Von Muenster and her husband, Eric, of Algona; and one sister-in-law, Elaine Edwardson and her husband, David, of Winona, Minn.. He is also survived by eight nieces and nephews: Nicole (Brian) Tjaden; Kyle (RaeAnn) Strack; Amy (Mike) Danielson; Chelsey Evan; Shaun Von Muenster; Scott Von Muenster; Noll (Jolynn) Ernst, and Kaitlyn Ernst; three great-nieces and nephews, Cade and Ava Tjaden, and Abby Danielson; and many close friends.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Melfred and Anna Mitchell; his paternal grandparents, Fred and Char Habeger; and a nephew, Jeffrey Von Muenster, in infancy.

Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Algona, was in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be made to www.oakcrestfuneralservices.com.

Dear Marti, Mitchell and Ryan:
You'll be in our thoughts and prayers. We have many, many precious memories of Kent. Most of them involve laughing and lots of smiles. Most also involve stories of his college roommates. We'll miss seeing him at the Iowa State Fair every year. We'll continue to pray for your strength.

I will always hold on to my fond memories of years at the Kossuth County fair with Kent and other friends. We had great times in our teens and though my pathes have taken me to Texas since 1979 I will always have Burt and Algona in my heart as my hometowns. I know that some day I will get to see Kent again one day when I get to Heaven.

Marti and family,

Its my greatest sympathy to hear of Kent's tragic passing. I am not sure if you remember me but we showed one of your calves (about 15 years or so ago) and had contact with Kent at shows where he judged etc. He will be greatly missed. And I send my thoughts and prayers to you and your family.

it has been 10 years since i had really had contact with kent, i purchased a steer that we showed in 1998 that came from kent, throughout that year i was given many words of encouragement and guidance from kent. there is no doubt in my mind that i gainded a tremendous amount of knowledge and self confidence from that relationship. but the best thing that i gained, was getting to know kent. the only things that kent loved more that good cattle were his good friends and his family. i know that this has to be tough on all of those people, but kent is with god now and because of that, god is with all of us.
