Kevin's enthusiasm for life was contagious and touched everyone who was lucky enough to know him. I was one of those fortunate people.
We came up through the ranks together hang gliding in Virginia, and then both were at Quest Air in Florida at the same time. He helped me so much-- both by example with his fanatical success and drive, and also with advice (like, 'the difference between you and the top pilots isn't as much as you might think'), his positivity, and actual lessons. Once he he ran in front of my glider while I zigzagged in an effort to miss him, as he tried to get me to flare earlier. I was screaming at him and swearing and he was zigzagging as fast as I was, with his hands up to block me.
And then there are the endless Kevin stories. Around 2002/03, a bunch of hang glider pilots decided to hike up the back of Woodstock Mountain to fly, as the road was closed from snow. Turned out carrying a 60 pound harness and a 70 pound glider through the snow up a mountain in 28 degree weather wasn't that awesome.
And then here came Kevin, running down the hill-- shirtless-- as he'd already dropped his glider at the top. He gestured at me to give him my glider, all the while running in place. Then he took off running with it. I was still trudging up the hill when he came back and took my husband's glider from him.
When you say the world is less without Kevin, it's true. His spirit and kindness and joy in life were unparalleled. I'm so sad I won't get to see him again. And for his beautiful family.

Kevin´s sister, Kathleen and I, were on a long distance backpacking trip while Kevin was at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, a few hundred miles away. Kevin decided he would do a training ride to come meet up with us on the trail. When he rode up to our campsite, Kathleen and I had also just gotten there and we had stuff to do to set up for the night. He said he was hungry and I pointed out our food bag. I told him that it had to last until our next resupply but that we had reserves if needed. When I came back, Kevin was shirtless, as always, and squatting over our food bag eating everything he could get his hands on, including uncooked noodles! Kathleen and I gave him such a hard time about his savage eating habits. Although I haven´t seen Kevin in years, I find myself telling that story all the time. He was hilarious!

Kevin Carter was a beacon of light in all the lives he touched. I first met Kevin during the winter of 2002/2003 in Maryland. Fresh from his hang gliding training in Draper, Utah, Kevin was eager to take to the skies. As a hang gliding 'Observer' then, I introduced him to various flying sites around Washington DC. It quickly became evident that Kevin was not only a natural athlete but someone destined to excel rapidly in both skill and experience.
Our friendship deepened over the years, filled with many memorable adventures. In 2006, when my wife and I moved to Evergreen, Colorado, Kevin and Melanie visited while he acclimated to altitude, trained and competed in the Leadville 100 cycling. Eventually, they too made Evergreen their home, and I was fortunate to share even more moments with this incredible couple.
Kevin exemplified the best qualities one could hope for in a father, husband, athlete, and friend. His kindness, generosity, attentiveness, and positivity were boundless. He approached everything with thoughtfulness and care, making a lasting impact on all who knew him. The world has undeniably lost a great man.
Since learning of Kevin's passing, my heart has been heavy with sorrow. I pray for peace that surpasses all understanding to embrace and uplift his family and friends, especially Melanie, Amber, Autumn, Karen, Dick, Kelly, Kathleen, and Kurtis, during this time of grief. Kevin's memory will forever be a guiding light in our hearts.
