Kevin Dunn Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 16, 2015.
Kevin Dunn, loving son and brother, dedicated husband and father, died unexpectedly on April 16th in Sacramento, California. He was 48. Kevin Joseph Dunn was born on September 13th, 1966, the third of five Dunn boys, at Rolling Hill Hospital in Elkins Park, PA, to Joan Curran and James Dunn. He spent his early years in Roslyn, PA, attending St. John of the Cross elementary school. He was a gifted athlete developing a passion for football, and baseball. Although he was a small, skinny kid, Kevin was a natural born fighter with lots of heart and a devastating left hand. His fighting skills were legendary amongst the neighborhood kids. Kevin also possessed a keen sensitivity and the rare compassion of a true artist. His wit, charm and charisma were evident at an early age. His wicked sense of humor added to his rare combination of courageous fighter who never backed down, yet never instigated a fight, and compassionate and sensitive soul who loved animals and the elderly, and who would become deeply moved at the sight of a beggar on the street. Kevin’s family moved to Furlong, PA in Bucks County in 1975. He attended Our Lady of Mount Carmel elementary school in Doylestown, PA, graduating in 1980. His first job was as a paperboy delivering the Daily Intelligencer newspaper. In Furlong, Kevin further pursued his love of sports, particularly basketball and wrestling. He was a fierce competitor in both sports, despite his stature. His love and knowledge of professional sports was intense and formidable. He was especially fond of professional wrestling during his high school years, attending many live pro wrestling events with his father and brothers. He attended Archbishop Wood for Boys High School in Warminster, PA, graduating in 1984. After attending Florida State University for a year, Kevin moved to Hoboken, NJ in 1988, supporting himself as a waiter at Friday’s on 42nd Street in Manhattan. He soon moved to the East Village living on 4th Avenue near St. Mark’s Place. He was hired as a concierge and doorman at Steve Rubell’s renowned Morgan Hotel on Madison Avenue. At the Morgan, he met his future wife, Sandra Trino. He became a bartender at the infamous Dugout bar in the Village, where he lived above the bar for a number of years. He enrolled at Hunter College to complete his undergraduate degree, graduating with honors. Around this time, Kevin also began intense training to become a boxer. In 1993, at age 26, he won the NYC AAU championship for his weight class, defeating opponents much younger than him. After graduating from Hunter, he worked as a phone technician, where he installed phone lines on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, for 15 years. While working fulltime, he attended Dominican University in Rockland County, NY, where he received his Masters Degree in Physical Therapy, graduating Cum Laude. He married Sandra Trino in 2001. Together they lived on West 18th Street for many years before settling with their daughter, Kaila, in Tudor City, on the East Side of Mid-town Manhattan. He worked as a physical therapist in several rehabilitation centers, in Jersey City, NJ, and Maui, HI, specializing in senior care physical therapy. Kevin is predeceased by his father, James Dunn. He is survived, loved, and remembered by his wife, Sandra, his daughter, Kaila, of Tudor City, Manhattan; his mother Joan Curran (Ann), of Cape May, NJ; his brothers, Jim (Angela) of Beverly, MA, Jeff (Susan) of Atlanta, GA, Tom of Colmar, PA and Greg (Mandy) of Valencia, CA; and his seven nephews and nieces: Seamus, Gavin, Liam, Rosalie, Erin, goddaughter Logan, and James Tony. In lieu of flowers, anyone wishing to honor Kevin’s memory, can do so by making a contribution to his daughter, Kaila’s education fund, care of: Jeffrey Dunn, 3096 Lanier Drive NE, Brookhaven, GA 30319. Please make checks payable to: College America and reference FBO Kaila James Dunn. A Funeral Memorial Mass will take place on May 16th at St Vincent’s Church, 109 E. Price Street, Germantown, Philadelphia, PA, at 10:30 AM. Prior to the Funeral Mass, there will be a family receiving hour at the church, at 9:30 AM. Burial will be private.

Kevin was my oldest godchild. I was proud to stand for him and equally proud of his many accomplishments. I will always remember Kevin's impish grin and feel sad that he left the world too soon. Thinking of all his family members with deepest sympathy and love.

I miss Kevin. He was a sensitive soul, larger-than-life, generous, compassionate and caring. He had such a great sense of humor and always the life of the party. My heart goes out to his family and to my daughter Sandra, Kevin's devoted soul-mate and best friend. But most of all to my granddaughter Kaila who worshipped him. May Kevin rest in peace at last.

My clearest memory of Kevin is watching him at a wrestling match when he was in grade school, he was so tough and so determined! I am so terribly sorry for your devastating loss. Thinking of all of you, with my deepest sympathy and love.

My strongest memories of Kevin are of a little guy with an effervescent and handsome smile roughhousing with his brothers around the large sofa in the Furlong rec room. I was so saddened when I heard the news. My deepest condolences to his family; Aunt Joan, Jim, Jeff, Tom, Greg, Sandra and Kaila on their loss.
