Kevin Holman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 28 to Feb. 8, 2014.
Kevin Holman was born July 5, 1964, in Tampa, Fla., the third of four sons. After living in Sioux City, Iowa, for a few years, the family moved to Lombard, Ill., where Kevin attended St. Pius X Grade School and Montini Catholic High School. Kevin was a fierce competitor in several sports, but was awarded a scholarship to play basketball at Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee, Wisc.
Kevin finished his Education degree at Panhandle State University in Guyman, Okla. From a young age, Kevin had a deep desire to teach and coach. He loved sports of all kinds and was "game" to coach anything. His first teaching job was in Houston, Texas, followed by his first coaching stint at Wingate High School at Ft. Wingate. Over six years, he coached volleyball, softball, baseball, football and boys basketball. Yeigo shash yeigo! From there, Kevin coached boys basketball, baseball and golf at Shiprock High School for four years, leading the girls golf team to a state championship.
In 2001, Kevin started coaching girls basketball at Farmington High School. The Scorps took the state title that year (2002) against Kirtland Central in an unforgettable game that showcased Kevin's talents as well as his girls. Kevin transitioned to coach the boys basketball team for a few years before deciding to coach the Kirtland Central girl's basketball team in 2010.
Over his career, Kevin received many awards, including District Coach of the Year several times, 4A Girls Basketball Coach of the Year 2002 and most recently, induction into the Navajo Nation Sports Hall of Fame. He had multiple runs at various state tournaments and experienced great wins, along with inevitable losses. Kevin was a passionate, strategic and tireless coach who nevertheless demonstrated great patience and concern for his students.
One of Kevin's great joys was radio announcing for area football and baseball games with his friend Rick Hoerner. If he wasn't at a game or practice or cheering for the Chicago Cubs, Bulls or Bears, Kevin could be found at one of the local golf courses. Many summer days involved 36 holes and a serious case of sunburn. Of course his very favorite activities involved his kids. Kevin loved helping coach Griff's baseball and basketball teams over the years and was proud to attend Quinn's concerts and recitals.
The Holman family could never adequately express their gratitude for the support that the Four Corners community has shown for Kevin. Thank you so very much for your love and concern.
Unfortunately, Kevin lost his brave battle with thyroid cancer on Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2014. Kevin is preceded in death by his father Wendell in 1998. He is survived by Suzanne; their children, Quinn and Griffin; his mother, Patricia; brothers, Keith (Michelle), Kirk and Kris; and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Kevin Holman Scholarship Fund at Citizen's Bank.
A viewing will be from 5 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 26, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 2100 E. 20th St. in Farmington., followed by the rosary at 6 p.m., recited by the Legion of Mary.
A Mass of Christian burial will be at 3 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 27, at St. Mary's Catholic Church.
Kevin's care is entrusted to Brewer, Lee and Larkin Funeral Home, 103 E. Ute St. in Farmington, 505-325-8688. Those who wish to express their condolences may do so at www.serenityandcompany.com.

Mr. Holman was a great teacher to my daughter at FHS...I'm grateful to have known him, he would always say hello and shake our hands when we see him. He was one of my daughter's favorite teachers. He will be missed by many. Thank u for teaching our youth in the classroom and on the court.

I am so sorry that Kevin has left us but he is not suffering anymore. He was a snappy dresser as well as a great coach for the teams he coached. I had the priviledge of knowing him from Wingate and watch his teams thrive under the coaching ability of this yound man. He will be truly missed! May his family know that we have learn from Kevin and appreciated him so much. God Bless You All.
