I am at a loss for words after reading in the Ivy Leaf Magazine about the loss of Soror Kim Leathers. She was such a sweet person and loved her family, her husband and her daughter so much. Rev. Leathers, please know that you and Kimille are in my prayers. She was a great help to me and the Association for the Study of African American Life and History when our conference was in Raleigh a few years back. May God keep you in his care.

My deepest heartfelt sympathy to Rev. Dr. Terrence Leathers and daughter Kimille for the loss their angel, one I considered a true and sincere friend from the time we met in the late 90's. I can still see her glowing face and at her baby shower awaiting the birth of little Kimille. "A blessing delayed but not denied" is what she would say. I will miss you my friend.
Heartfelt sympathy,

My dear Kim: I have tried to write a message to you and express my condolences to Terence and Kimille every since Dr. Wardell Payne called me the morning after you went home to be with the Lord but no words can say to you, your husband or child how so very sad I am that you are no longer with us. I guess it is selfish to ask: How could this be why not me instead? If I could bring you back I would go in your place. You deserved to live longer. Yes you touched a multitude. You were a good and faithful servant job well done. You wrote your own Celebration of Life. The years that you, Dr. Payne and I worked on the Directory...at Howard University School of Divinity were the best years of my life and I am honored to have known you, worked with you and considered my self a friend. I will cherish the memories we shared forever. You were born, lived and died on the Lord's Day in the Lord's house a classy lady to the end. Thank you for being the Queen that you were, Your King and Princess will carry on the legacy that you layed out for them to follow. Until then. Sleep in Heavenly Peace my friend, you were like the daughter I never had. I love you. Gloria

Kim was the babysitter of my brother and me in Washington, DC in the 1970s. We lived four houses away from Kim and her parents who adored their only child. Kim was a kind and gentle babysitter and neighbor. To know her was to love her. Kimille, your mom will continue to be the wind beneath your wings. She is with you in every gust of wind. Terence, you are blessed to have had such a wonderful soul by your side. Remember the good times for you shared them with someone very special.

Kim was part of a special bond of children that had the opportunity to create childhood memories of riding bikes, hiking through Rock Creek Park, swimming at our neighbors pools and attending our Annual Colorado Avenue Block parties. Through it all, her light always shined. We witnessed her blossom into a beautiful, intelligent and caring spirit. She was blessed to follow her destiny. I cannot imagine how many lives she blessed along her way. Please take comfort in knowing her light and her gifts will forever shine in the lives of many. Well Done, Kim. Well Done.

Dr. Leathers and daughter, I extend my deepest sympathy to you and your family. Dr. Kim, as she was so affectionately known in the Department of Social Sciences, was such a blessing and true friend. Upon my departure from Shaw University, she came over and bought me a huge bag of gifts and keepsakes. She was so adorable, kind, thoughtful and pleasant to be around. We who knew her will never ever forget her. My prayers and thoughts are with you during this time. May you continue to look unto the hills which come your help and strength. Paul reminds us, "To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord." May the hand of God continue to lovingly rest peacefully upon you at this time.

As a Proud Shaw Alumni parent of Walter Baker Council 03", I got to know this awesome christian woman and one expecting excellence from all of her students. So many of them went on to get their graduate degrees and Ph.D,s and/or great career opportunities. This was a result of students having mastered the Honors Program under the leadership of Dr. Kim Leathers. I am so proud that I was able to express my appreciation to her for the outstanding work she was doing with our students even in extra curricular activities such as the Honda Quiz Bowl. Terence and Kimmie,
When I arrived in Washington, DC in 1985 I was a scared, wide-eyed HU freshman and I was overwhelmed by all of the "stuff" of living 1,000 miles away from home, in a big city. Your wife...your mother...was the first friend I made here. Kim was such a sweetheart. I saw firsthand her kindness, generosity, and thoughtful nature. She was like my big sister and to be honest, she helped define for me what a real quality woman was all about. Kim and the Boyd family embraced me, and I was honored to be treated like family for all the years that followed. I remember when she started dating Rev (smile). I even worked the wedding! My heart is so saddened by this loss of my friend and anchor - but lil' Queen is with her beloved parents, and we will all see her smiling face again in time. Love you, and thanks for sharing this wonderful woman with all of us. Her life had tremendous impact on me and so many others.
