Gordon Hayward Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 17, 2009.
HAYWARD, Gordon Edward Mr. Gordon Hayward of Medicine Hat, passed away peacefully surrounded by friends and staff of Riverview Care Centre on Friday, March 6th, 2009 at the age of 89 years. Gordon's memory will be cherished by long-time friends who became his family, Ron and Trudy Ellsworth and Fran and Herman Wahl along with their families. Gordon was predeceased by his loving wife, Frieda, who passed away on January 17th, 2003; his parents; and one sister. Gordon was born on October 19th, 1919 in Neudorf, Saskatchewan. In 1941, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy and served on ships at both the Atlantic and Pacific Coasts. Gordon married Frieda Singer in 1948 in Edmonton and they were married for 54 years. He apprenticed as a machinist and also worked for CPR, CNR, and Imperial Oil for several years. In 1966, Gordon and Frieda moved to the Crowsnest Pass where he was employed by Becker Drilling and they later moved to Fort Saskatchewan where he worked for Imperial Oil. Upon retiring in 1980, Gordon and Frieda relocated to Medicine Hat. They were very involved with Cubs and Scouts and were proud Royal Canadian Legion and Moose Lodge members working at various Legions for many years. Gordon was also a member of the Medicine Hat Rifle Range and one of his passions was his gun collection. After the death of his wife, Gordon moved to The Valleyview where he lived for three years. When more care was required, he settled in at Riverview Care Centre where he resided until his death. Gordon's 'family' would like to thank the staff at both The Valleyview and Riverview Care Centre for the wonderful care they provided to Gordon, and Dr. M. Wong who cared for Gordon for many years and for whom Gordon had much respect. Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at SAAMIS MEMORIAL FUNERAL CHAPEL, #1 Dunmore Road SE, Medicine Hat, on Monday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. The Funeral Service will be held in SAAMIS MEMORIAL FUNERAL CHAPEL on Tuesday, March 17th, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Loren Hosfield officiating. Interment will follow in the Field of Honor at Hillside Cemetery, Medicine Hat.
