Kristi Pluimer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 4, 2024.
Kristi Lynn Pluimer at age 68, passed away in her home surrounded by family and friends on May 9th, 2024. Kristi will be deeply missed by all that knew her.

Kristi was born in Milaca, Minnesota on October 24th, 1955 to Don and Tillie Pluimer, where she spent her formative years. She attended Pease Christian Reform school through the 6th grade. She then joined the Milaca Public School system and graduated from Milaca High School in 1973.

Upon graduation she attended the University of Minnesota - Duluth for a time. Kristi then moved to San Francisco, CA where she worked in the financial services industry. Kristi made her way home to Minnesota where she became involved in the food cooperatives in the Metro area, most notably Lakewinds Coop as Financial Director and Office Manager, and The Wedge Coop, Where Kristi rose to become the Project Manager for The Wedge Coop.

More than anything, Kristi was a devoted wife and loving mother. Kristi loved spending time with her husband and children, sharing stories, watching favorite movies, and keeping abreast of the news. She was always there to offer guidance, support, and encouragement regardless of her own challenges.

In 2004 Kristi hosted a foreign exchange student from the Netherlands, Bianca Zeeman. They grew close and became connected for life. Most recently, she attended Bianca's wedding in the Netherlands. Bianca's son, Destin's name was inspired by time spent in Destin, Florida with Kristi and Bruce.

In her free time Kristi loved to travel, read, and play Wordle with friends, quilt, and most recently elaborately paint stones that she gave to her friends and family. She enjoyed camping, or rather, glamping, in various state parks. Kristi was a true foodie, an excellent cook, and a recipe junkie.

Kristi is survived by her loving husband Bruce Nyquist of Hopkins, MN, her children Tomas Gonda of Hopkins, MN, Aaron and Kristy Nyquist of Brainerd, MN, and Andrea Nyquist of Sartell, MN. Her siblings Michael and Rosean Pluimer of Bloomington, MN, Jim and Mary Pluimer of Milaca, MN, Becky and Doug McAtee of Ely, MN, and Larry Pluimer and Asha Rehnberg of Bainbridge Island, WA. Her nephews Enik and Erin Pluimer of Sartell, MN, Justin McAtee and Phaedra Henderson of Phoenix, AZ, Kyle McAtee and Ashley Gilmore of Duluth, MN.

A memorial will be held for family and friends August 17th at Burnes Park, 301 2nd St N, Hopkins, MN 55343 at the East Pavilion. Food, music, games, and memories will be shared by those who loved her. The celebration will begin at 11:30 AM and end at 5:00 PM.

Kristi devoted much energy and time helping others with breast cancer as a member and mentor of The Firefly Sisterhood. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her honor to The Firefly Sisterhood.

I´ve known Kristi for 40 years and think of her daily. She´s the best of friends: there to store our memories and be engaged with each and every day. We wrote daily for the last couple of years. Honest, loving, fun and faithful. She is so missed yet always present in my heart.

Kristi and I were connected through Firefly Sisterhood, a non-profit organization that matches women going through breast cancer with a peer mentor guide. While I was technically Kristi´s guide, she quickly became my guide, friend and cancer confidante. Over phone calls, texts and in-person meetups (usually involving wine) we shared our experiences, fears and anxieties living with cancer. Kristi was quick to send along information she had researched on new treatments or a share a fun book she´d read. She was always up for connecting and I loved learning about her family and her latest trip to visit friends. I´ll be forever grateful for my time with Kristi.
May her memory be a blessing.

I was happy for my brother Bruce and Kristi on their wedding day at the Lutheran Church in Hopkins. A long journey for them--they had arrived home.

Kristi--a bright woman, full of love, a kind sense of humor, quick to laugh, and astonishingly courageous.

Dear Bruce and Annie, Aaron and Tomie, Your wife/mom Kristi was such an easy person to be with. Though I didn´t know her as long as you all, I thoroughly enjoyed our time together. She was intelligent, witty and funny, a good conversationalist, good cook, good and loyal friend, and generous person. She really loved whom she loved and was a nurturer and mom by nature. And Bruce, it was easy to see and feel the comfortable, committed love that flowed between you two. I am so sorry she´s gone too soon. And so sorry for your loss of partner/wife Bruce and loving Mom, Tomie, Annie and Aaron. She´d surely be cheering for each of you to be all you can be and to live your dreams as much as you can. Rest in peace Kristi, I miss you and always will.

My favorite memories of Kristi:

The first is the pants-wetting laughter we had when she and Bruce visited us in California and I made a chicken enchilada dish. I don´t follow recipes and this one had mushroom soup in it and I decided it needed more "sauce" so I used 2 cans of soup. We all laughed so hard when I brought it from the oven to the table! It became known as Crème de la Mexico and still brings chuckles. And here I find out how much she loved REAL Mexican food! No wonder we laughed so much at that soupy mess - it tasted good though.

The second sweet memory I have is coming to her bedside in the last days and Kristi opening her eyes, looking up at me, reaching up her arms and saying, "I suppose you´re here for another kiss." What a special long, sweet hug we had with both of us crying softly.

Kristi, I miss you hugely. I miss all the times we didn´t have and am filled with gratitude for the times we did have.

Kristi
So many memories of our growing up years, coming of age... that only you and I share and can truly appreciate. Those memories are timeless and have brought me great joy over the years when my mind revisits us.
As you said in your last correspondence, the difficulty to go our own ways is perhaps testimony of our deep bond despite our differences that manifested as we grew and changed. Thank you for you and the beautiful part of the tapestry of my life that you played. Kristi, you have been my hardest good-bye. Bean

Kristi,
My forever 1024. I loved you dearly and miss you beyond words. Thank you for being so accepting of me, so kind and honest, and for all of your love and support. I miss your laser beams, exchanging recipes, and your smile. Most of all, I just miss you.

Sometime in San Francisco, probably in the 80's Kristi and I found ourselves stuck in a broken down VW while our friends went to find help. It was the first time we had spent time together and we discovered we had the same sense of humor, world view and love of food. That memory bonded us for life.

Kristi was a breath of fresh air at the Wedge. She was approachable and unflappable with such a dry sense of humor. She could always provide the reality check & validation I needed. And so talented. I loved working with her.

Kristi and I loved cooking together. She helped me cater a couple of weddings for friends years ago. She loved Mexican food and we made a really good cooking team. We also laughed a lot when we were in each other´s company. I loved spending time with her and will miss her dearly.

Dear Kristi,

I will never forget how my sister had such a loving experience in America thanks to you. From the first day she is fully accepted as your own. Despite the distance, this has never changed. Thank you.
