Kurt Jaenike Obituary

Published by Journal Gazette & Times-Courier from Aug. 10 to Aug. 12, 2011.
FRESNO, Calif. - Kurt Vaughn Jaenike, 54, of Fresno, CA passed away on Monday, August 8, 2011. He was born February 26, 1957 in Denver, Colorado to Vaughn and Ruth Jaenike. Kurt graduated from Charleston HS, received his bachelors degree in Political Science at Eastern Illinois University, and earned a degree in law at the University of Nebraska. He followed his dream to practice law in California, where he was a respected bankrupcy lawyer for almost 30 years. Kurt was an honest, charming and warm person who made friends easily and loved the company of others. There are so many people he had a deep connection with who will miss him dearly. One of the most important aspects in Kurt's life was his loving relationship with his family. As a twin, Kurt always had a special place in his heart for his other half, Kristen. Kurt loved movies, politics and finding the humor in everyday situations. He rolled with life's punches with resilience and honor. He is survived by his parents, Vaughn and Ruth Jaenike of Charleston, IL; brother Fritz Jaenike and wife Margo of Harlingen, TX; sister Kristen Ballsrud and husband Dave of Grapevine, TX; sister Kathy Labinski and husband John of Austin, TX; sister Gretchen Norman and husband Ted of Morrison, CO; nephews Nick and Jake Ballsrud, Matt and Mark Labinski, and Andrew and Sam Norman; and nieces Karli and Kayla Jaenike. A memorial service is scheduled at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 9th and Cleveland, Charleston, IL at 3:00 pm Wednesday, August 17. A reception will be held after the service in the Tarble Arts Center Atrium, also at 9th & Cleveland. All are welcome. Memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church and The Vaughn and Ruth Jaenike Access to Arts Award fund, c/o Eastern Illinois University Foundation, 601 W. Lincoln Ave., Charleston, IL 61920.

This is Kimberly - Kurt's secretary from Kurt V. Jaenike & Associates. Kurt was the best boss ever and great friend. We did lots of things together. He took me to court and to visit clients. Unheard of these days. I just found out about Kurt's death and I am devistated but also very, very proud of him. His family is such a great inspiration to me and will always be. I have very fond memories of the years I spent with this gentleman and I will never, ever forget him. Rest in Peace Kurt. Luv, Kim

I have been late in expressing my condolences and heartfelt sympathy to the Jaenike family. I was shocked to hear of Kurt's passing.  He was my closest friend during my late teens and early 20's. Over the years we lost contact with each other.    But I have many splendid memories. The one I cherish the most is when we were in our early twenties living for a brief period in Los Angeles. We were two Midwestern kids sharing a modest apartment in Beverly Hills.  Kurt had just bought a yellow Toyota Corolla and we finally had wheels to get around the city. It was early in the evening on a Friday night when we christened the ride.  I remember how the setting sun made the boulevard glow as we headed north on La Cienega; the sound of Joe Jackson's "Stepping Out" playing on the radio; and how the two of us were happy to be in LA.  It was a special lifetime moment.  Even as I write this, I vividly recall the contentment one feels only when with the closest of friends.
Now my forthright friend has stepped into a new adventure.  Jaenike family, Kurt greatly impacted my life. To this day, I have never met a man with such integrity.  He was my friend and once, my closest confidant.  My thoughts are with you.

Dear Kurt,
Celia here!! I know you were watching down on your memorial yesterday, and the wonderful reception your family provided to celebrate your life!! After hearing your family taking turns telling stories on and about you, them saying how much they will miss you and will always love you more than anything, Kathy saying it'll always be a family of seven, and then Kris, God Love Her, saying she kept expecting a call from you, even after you'd passed. Nobody knows why it's always the "good ones" that go early...you were a "GREAT ONE", and who do you think you are leaving all of us so early?? We all know you were with us yesterday. It was so obvious..the warmth of you was everywhere. Robin said when she was getting out of her car, one of her prayer cards, that she keeps on her visor, fell into her lap! She knew that was you!! I'd earlier told Kris that you'd always be sitting on her shoulder, always with her! You know what, I noticed she was walking a little cock-eyed!! There you were again! You were the best, and always will be the best!! When I meet you in heaven, when my time comes, you are gonna get the biggest noogie from me! Who's gonna make my Manhattans now?? Thanks a lot, Mister Man!! I'll love you forever, dear friend, and if you'd like, you are welcome to sit on my shoulder anytime you want to!! Love you, Kurt!! Love, one of your best friends, Celia I'm honored to have known you all these years!

I came home to an email tonight with the caption "Sad news." I opened it and a high-school friend told me that Kurt had passed away. I was shocked and so saddened to learn this. I have many memories of this caring, thoughtful, and generous friend. When I envision my senior year of high school, I see so many images of Kurt and me fluttering through my mind, along with those of Kurt, Frank, Cindi and I, as a tight foursome, having madcap adventures, taking off on escapades (not all of which were entirely legal) performing in the musical together, getting late night pizza, making, and debating, grand plans for our lives after school.
What fun we had together! I remember first meeting him in Advanced Rhetoric class. He told me he was from Lincoln, NE and I somehow got that confused with Boys Town, Nebraska. I thought he was an orphan, without a family. I thought, "I wonder why he came to Charleston. Maybe he has been adopted!" Later that day, I met Kris and Kathy, and then I really got confused. :-) But our friendship was born in that class and flourished to the point that Mrs. Plath, in complete frustration I now understand, eventually shipped me off to a corner of the room, separate from Kurt, so that we would stop talking!

I share these old memories so that you, Kurt's beloved family, will know that he will always live on in the hearts of the many, many friends he made over the years. He was both loved, and loving, and won't be forgotten.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Jaenike, Fritz, Kris, Kathy and Gretchen,

I have thought so much about what to write as no words adequately describe the love I had for Kurt. He was special from the moment I met him, and oh so handsome! His laugh, smile, humor, respect, and graciousness never ceased to amaze me.

And your family..Oh my, what you all have meant to me over the years. You always opened your home and hearts and made me feel so welcome and loved. The hot buttered rum hikes in the state park, the fireside chats, the manhattans, and the fun we all enjoyed together. Not to mention the crazy formals, frat/sorority parties, trips to Chicago, and the road trip to see the grandparents and the law school Kurt would attend. Kurt meant so much to my mom, dad and sister too.

My heart aches for your loss. Kurt, your family, and all of the wonderful memories will forever remain in my heart.

Love you Kurt...Godspeed, and see you again one day.

And, sweet Jaenike family, know that I pray for God to wrap His arms around you and hold you tight.

Love, Susan

Dear Jaenike Family,
I would like to express my condolences to you all in this very difficult time.
Kurt was my manager at Fireside Bank's Legal Servicing Dept.
Because of his wonderful personality, he was very easy to work for. We became good friends right away.
The memories I have of him will stay with me forever. He never failed to make me laugh.
He spoke of his family quite often, I felt like I knew each member.
I was lucky enough to meet his parents as they came to Fireside Bank for a visit.
He would speak of his twin, Kris all the time, even showed us pictures of her & himself while she was in town on business in the bay area. He truly loved his family!
I will miss everything about him so much, especially that "one of kind" laugh! Kurt, I am so lucky to have known you! A Hui Hou!
My prayers will continue to be with his family.

Look at that face, such a handsome man! I remember when he first came to work at Fireside Bank, & I finally convinced him to let his hair go salt & pepper. So distinguished! I am going to a concert in Fresno next month & was hoping to meet up with Kurt during that weekend, as I hadn't seen him since he left the Bay Area. I received the terrible news today & have been deeply saddened ever since. Kurt was such a complete joy to be around. His smile could light up a room...& that laugh of his!! Just infectious!

I will miss you, my friend. I hope that there is something beyond all of this madness, and that we will meet again. My sincere condolences to the family that he adored. Your son, your brother, your uncle...was an amazing character with a zest for life. I cherish the memories I have of him & consider myself lucky to have known him. I will miss and love Kurt everyday of my life! I still can't believe I'll never see his beautiful face again! He was a wonderful, loving man, who I feel lucky to have met years ago in high school! I don't remember the actual time we first met, but I have always thought we were just destined to meet!! My favorite thing was making him laugh, which wasn't hard, and I'll never, ever forget his laugh! He'd always walk over to you and hug you tight, almost like a thanks for the laughter! So, needless to say, I tried hard to make him laugh!! His hugs were great!! We all have a special place in our hearts for the special people we've met along our journey of life. Kurt's always been in my special place since we met! Vaughn, Ruth and the rest of his wonderful family, I am so sorry for your loss of your wonderful Kurt! Just know, you've got friends all over praying for you, and prayer does do amazing things! He loved his family and friends so much, and he made everyone feel special! Kris, I know you two had the special twin bond, but you'll always have it with Kurt, because he'll always be there, sitting on your shoulder, helping you through your life. You are a wonderfully loving family, and that love will help get you through this tragedy. The world mourns for losing this wonderful guy! He still had so much more to do here. I love him, and will always love him! I'll remember all my memories of being with him, and cherish them! I'm so, so sorry for your loss. That sounds so trivial, but I know you know know the love behind it! I love you all, and will forever. I'll never forget Kurt, or his laugh!! I love you! Celia
