Kurt Murphy Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 14, 2024.
Kurt Richard Murphy was released from his earthly bond on July 4, 2024. He was born to Eleanor and Rick Mauerer in Chicago, IL on November 26, 1952. Robert Hugh Murphy raised Kurt from a very early age and formally adopted him at the age of 17.

Kurt graduated from the University of Illinois at Champaign Urbana- where he also received a Masters of Library Science in 1981. He received a Masters in Business Administration from Arizona State University in 1988.

From 1981-1984 Kurt was Systems Librarian at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. In 1984, Kurt married Yvonne Fiala. The couple moved to Eugene, OR in 1984 when Kurt accepted a position as Systems Librarian at University of Oregon-Eugene. In 1985, Kurt and Yvonne moved to Scottsdale, AZ where Kurt continued his career at Arizona State University, first as Head of Bibliographic Records and then Associate Dean of Personnel until he retired in 2009. As a member of the Administrative team, his responsibilities covered all five campuses of ASU. He is remembered by his colleagues for his long career where he earned their respect and trust. He effectively managed with intelligence and empathy for his employees.

"Kurto" as he was known to family and friends was passionate about music and was a skilled player of electric guitar. He had a wry sense of humor and was loyal and readily supported family during life's ups and downs.

His daughter, Nicole Murphy, predeceased him in 2008. He is survived by his mother, Ellie Murphy, sisters Sara and Courtney Murphy and close friends Yvonne Murphy and Mario Vavra.

I knew Kurt from Woodridge Illinois where we grew up two houses away from each other. He was a wonderful "brother" all through grade and high schools. My condolences to his family...Kathy Bonk Dondero

I was shocked and saddened to see this news. I will remember Kurto as an older brother, a guitar player, a broken-hearted father and, ultimately, a friend.

Ellie, Sara and Courtney: you are in my thoughts. But you always were.

To Kurt´s friends and family, I´m so sorry for your loss. I first met Kurt when he came to play lead guitar in the band I was in, that was the summer of 2016. Kurt and I stayed in touch, and one day he invited me to jam with some of his friends. I´m grateful for that, and will be forever. Rest in peace Kurt.

I was so sorry to learn of the recent passing of my good friend Kurt Murphy. We were colleagues at Arizona State University for almost a decade during the 1990s and maintained our friendship after my departure from A.S.U. in 2000. Kurt had a passion for music and a phenomenal talent as a guitar player. For years, we played music together and performed at a variety of venues throughout the greater Phoenix area. We had many great times together doing what we both loved. He will always live on in my memories of our special times together. I know Kurt touched many lives and will be sorely missed by many people. Condolences to his family. May he rest in peace.
