Lana Downs Awbrey Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 1, 2025.
Lana Downs Awbrey, née Downs, late of Dallas, Texas, passed away on January 27, 2025, after a long battle with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, surrounded by her loved ones at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center - Plano.

Lana was born on June 2, 1955, in Gilmer, Texas. A graduate of the University of Houston, she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in studio painting with a minor in history. She taught a range of subjects- digital graphics, web design, photography, painting, drawing, advertising, and multimedia-for both middle and high school students.

Lana's dedication and impact on her students were recognized when she received the "Most Influential for Inspiring Our Youth in the Quest for Success" award in both 2004 and 2005. On April 2, 1983, Lana married her life partner, Harold Awbrey, and they were together until Harold's untimely passing on December 11, 2010. Although not physically here, Harold was always in her thoughts until her last days. Lana, known for her great sense of humor and interest in politics, was a devoted member of the Church of Christ and always willing to help others. Lana loved Jesus and Christmas! Her love for good food was undeniable, especially Tillamook ice cream, her favorite treat. An avid traveler, she will be fondly remembered for her Las Vegas trip, where she danced and sipped drinks at the Tropicana, thoroughly enjoying herself. With Harold, she explored the many joys of California, from wine tasting and visiting the zoo to days at the beach, Disneyland, and SeaWorld.

Lana is survived by her mother, Betty Sue Downs, sister, Belinda and her husband, Kevin White, Angela and Steve Bayne, Randy and Louise Downs, Wanda Urias and Raymond Ramirez, and Bobby Downs, two very special nieces Crystal and Elly, Crystal and Michael Haze, Elly and Mitchell Kelly, David White and Amanda Orr, Mikaela White, Elisa Urias, Jonathan Neal Bayne, Jesse and Miranda Bayne, Austin and Christine Bayne, Lateaf Smith, Leah Toves, David Graves, Trinity Krueger, Trystan Krueger, Dominic Kelly, George Kennedy IV, Karah Bayne, Beau Bayne, and Kristopher Bayne. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Awbrey, Rayford Downs, her dad, and her dog, Boo.

Lana was cremated and will be laid to rest in October 2025 at Garner State Park in Concan, Texas, alongside her beloved husband, Harold, and their dog, Boo.

Dear Lana,
When I think of you I think about all the fun, the trouble, friends, and how we protected each other.
I can't believe we didn't get to spend our retirements together. There were so many things that have been left undone, the trip to New York, the trip to Graceland just to name a couple. I thought we still had many years together. Unfortunately, your time on earth was limited. I know that you are in Jesus' arms because you have spent your life loving Christ and being a true Christian. I only pray that I can come close to being as good as you.
I have loved you all my life, and I miss you so much. When you died, you took a piece of me with you. Until we meet again in heaven, I will love and miss you. You were not only my sister, but my best friend!

Although oftentimes living in different cities, we remained friends throughout life, spending precious times together. We celebrated our 50th birthdays with a trip to NYC. She made friends with whomever our path crossed. My favorite memory was watching her sing along with the Harlem Gospel Choir. Priceless! In her final months, we mostly talked about our faith and exchanged prayers. She placed all her faith in God and showed concern for others beyond herself. I was so blessed to have such a friend. Love and miss her. Carolyn

I Miss My Dear Friend Lana, we went through our Grief Journey Together as we both lost Our Soul Mates in 2010. She encouraged me to be a judge for VASE and Mentored Me through the process. Lana took me to My First Margarita Ball! We had some real good times with our extended Grief Share Group, meeting up for Good Grief its Monday Night. My little dog Shorty and Lana's little dog Boo, enjoyed playing together too!
I Thank God For Bringing Lana Into My Life!
