Lance Madsen Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 8, 2014.
Lance Madsen 8/28/1948 4/5/2014

Lance Madsen passed away peacefully at his home in Eureka with his wife and son at his side on Saturday evening April 5, 2014.

Lance was was a fourth generation Eurekan, born on August 28, 1948 to William and Ann Madsen. Lance graduated from Eureka High School in 1966 and served in the Army from 1967 to 1969, including a year in Korea. He pursued higher education, earning a degree from College of the Redwoods and elective courses at Humbolt State and at several other California university campuses. Lance was a sworn police officer with the City of Eureka Police Department from 1973 to 1986. His duties ranged from traffic specialist to being one of the first Old Town foot patrolmen in the late 1970's. He finished his police career as a Detective assigned to investigate crimes against children and general sex crimes, and as a Field Training Officer.

After leaving the EPD Lance joined the Eureka Housing Authority, serving as that agency's Tenant Relations Officer/Community Liaison. He served the Housing Authority for 25 years before retiring due to health reasons. Throughout these years of professional service, Lance was deeply involved with the Eureka community in other capacities. He was twice elected and served two terms on the Eureka City Council in the 1990's. He was elected to a third term in 2010, but retired after three years due to his declining health.

Lance served on the Advisory Board of the Eureka Redevelopment Agency, and actively participated in the city waterfront revitalization project, the east-west rail project and the Landbridge Alliance. He was a member of the Eureka Morning Exchange and served a term as its president. He was charter member of the Eureka Concert and Film Center and served terms as president and vice-president. Lance actively supported the Boys and Girls Club of the Redwoods for over twenty years, including serving on the Board of Directors. Lance was a valued member of the Eureka Council of the Knights of Columbus, and was honored to be a Fourth Degree Knight.

Lance was diagnosed with a terminal lung condition in 2007. He pursued an aggressive treatment regime which led to a successful double lung transplant operation in September 2011. By the grace of God this truly provided Lance with a new lease on life. Unfortunately, in January of this year he was diagnosed with chronic rejection of his transplanted lungs. He had fought hard to stay with us, but he died in peace and in the presence of our Lord.

His wife Kathy and his family will be forever grateful for the excellent and loving care that he received from the staffs at the Stanford Medical Center and the Hospice of Humbolt.

Lance is survived by his wife Kathy, whom he married in 2005, and his son Dustin, from a prior marriage. Lance was extremely proud of his son's service in the Marine Corps. Lance is survived by his mother, Ann, his brother Bill (Sandy), his sisters, Jill (Art), Kim (Ron), and Gina (John). Lance's brother Mark died in 2009. Lance will be greatly missed by his immediate and extended family, and by his many good friends.

Viewing is scheduled for Thursday, April 10, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Pierce Mortuary, 707 H Street, Eureka. Rosary service will be held on Friday, April 11, at 11:00 AM in St. Bernard Church at 6th & H Streets, Eureka. A Funeral Mass will follow the Rosary at 11:30 AM in the church. Burial services will be conducted thereafter at the St. Bernard Catholic Cemetery, followed by a reception at the St. Bernard parish hall.

Dustin, You have been in my thoughts quite often over the years and I worried over you as you served the country. You were one of my kids' First best friends when your Dad brought you to my house for daycare. Wis I had digitized some of the photos I still have of you with Sara and Weston! I still miss Laura, now your Dad is gone too...I'm so sorry for your loss! Your family will remain in my prayers. XOX

I WAS SHOCKED AND SADDENED BY LANCE'S DEATH. I SERVED ON THE "CITY COUNCIL" WITH HIM FOR SIX YEARS AND ALWAYS THOUGHT OF HIM AS A KID. HE WAS GREAT.

It is with a heavy heart I say my last goodbye to you Lance. I was deeply saddened when I got the call that you had passed away. Lance was a truly kind benevolent man; he made the world a better place while he was here. He was a mentor, friend, and role model who changed my life in so many ways. He and Laura were amazing parents to Dustin and their love for him was what made me want to grow up to be a parent. Lance's stories and work helping abused and impoverished children were the beginnings of my inspiration to work with and help abused and underprivileged youth. As a young teen and adult I did odd jobs for Lance and Laura. I also spent a ton of time at their house babysitting Dustin until he became school age and I moved out of the area. I remember Lance and Laura taking me on vacations and going to Redway with them. Lance was always telling me I could do anything I set my mind to…that I was smart and had good business skills. He even talked me into joining the AM Exchange club when I became the manager of Pizza Hut just out of high school. He always pushed me to be more than I thought I could be. Lance touched my life in so many ways there are no words that will do justice to what he meant to me or to give credence to how kind a man he was. When he and Laura came to my birthday party several years ago I am so grateful I was able to thank them and tell them about how they had helped shape me and inspire me to live life to its fullest. Lance was the first one to say it was all me and my hard work, but we both knew he had helped shape me by being such a positive role model. As a teacher and now moving into the role of an administrator there have been many a day I have used stories from my youth that involve things Lance taught me and told me. My students have also benefited greatly from the wisdom Lance imparted upon me. On a lighter note, one night when I was babysitting for Dusty, Lance and Laura came home and told me they wanted me to try some blackberry wine they had won at a fundraising raffle. They only gave me a small sip, but that was the first time I tried alcohol. We all laughed as I thought one sip might make me drunk. (I was a sheltered twenty year old at that time) Though the years, Lance and I have kept in touch, but now that he is gone I know the time we had together will be a cherished memory. Eureka has lost another angel. He left a wonderful lasting mark on our town and lives. Every time I come home for a visit and go to the waterfront or hear or see a funny frog I will remember Lance and his contagious laughter and smile.

My heart goes out to you Dustin, as I know losing both of your parents way too soon is so very hard. Just know how proud they both were of you as you have grown up to be everything they always wanted you to be. All of their hopes and dreams for you that they used to talk about when you were so small is what you have accomplished and become. You are the best of both of them, and I hope you will always carry their love with you.

To Lance's loving wife Kathy, I am so very sorry you have lost your best friend. I know you made his time here very happy and filled with love; he was truly blessed to have found true love twice and to have you by his side as he bravely dealt with this illness.

Ann, a mother should never have to bury her son. I am so very sorry for your loss. Please take solace in knowing that the time Lance was on this earth was far too short, but the lives he touched and the difference he made will live on forever.

I know he is with the angels now and he is probably already doing something wonderful in some way to help others. My heartfelt love and condolences are being sent to you all as your father, son, husband, brother, and friend will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Lance, one last time I raise a glass a toast just for you with some blackberry wine in a frog glass for being who you were making this world a truly better place because you were in it.

O Lance, you set the public service bar sooo high. With Boys & Girls Club of the Redwoods you inspired me and many others to make a better place for kids who have so little. I will miss your plain spoken advice and relative fearless manner to ask for help and or money for "our communities kids". God Bless you Lance

Please accept my deepest condolences in Lance's passing. As a teenager in the mid to late Seventies, Lance employed me at his home to do a multitude of odd jobs, from putting in his front yard to helping him cold tar his roof – twice! Never forget when I shook off the excess tar on the tool he gave me to reach in the recesses (a toilet bowl brush) and that excess tar smacked him straight in the ear! He sat there on the roof laughing his head off! Truth of the matter: Lance created jobs for me to provide money for my high school tuition! He used to swing by my house Friday evenings in his patrol car and pick me up to spend a few hours riding along. Lance was an honorable man – one who will be sorely missed.

The Madsen Family has my sympathy. I first became acquainted with Lance and his family over 60 years ago at Redway. Our paths seldom crossed but as a one-time city official I greatly appreciated his efforts on behalf of our hometown.
