LARRY WRAY ASHER
June 18, 1948 ~ January 28, 2018

After a brave and valiant 18-year battle with renal cell carcinoma and beating it three times, Larry Asher passed away on January 28th in Palm Desert, CA, during his fourth and fierce fight with this cancer. He did this with grace, bravery, and dignity and is home in heaven with his Lord and Saviour.
Larry Wray Asher was born in St. Louis, MO on June 18, 1948 to Ervin and Hazel Asher. Upon graduating from Cuba High School outside St. Louis, Larry decided he wanted to forego a baseball scholarship to college and serve his country. He enlisted in the Marine Corps where he served his country in Vietnam.
Returning home, he found that he liked California near the Marine Corps base and married his first wife, Deborah Huckstep. Larry and Deborah had two daughters, Laurel Ann and Kerryn Beth. Completing his undergraduate and graduate college education at Colorado State University, and loving the great outdoors, he soon moved to Montana after a teaching job and being temporary headmaster at Campion Academy.
He took a job a Bridger Bowl as lift attendant while seeking a job with Bozeman Public Schools who quickly hired Larry as a social studies teacher at Bozeman Junior High School. He soon moved up to Bozeman High School and became an outstanding AP US History and AP Government teacher. He touched many lives as a teacher and softball coach.
Larry began developing his love of golf while in Bozeman, and loved golfing in the desert. Larry also enjoyed his service with the Gallatin Empire Lions Club, where he was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellow.
In 1999, he married Susan Wilcox, a fellow social studies teacher and became a stepfather to her two children, Lisa and Shayne. He retired from Bozeman High School in 2003 and moved with Susan to Vancouver, WA. He taught AP Economics and AP US History at Evergreen High School and was an assistant softball coach. He was then honored to help open Union High School as an AP Economics, AP US History, and AP Government teacher and assistant boys' and girls' golf coach. He retired from education in 2012 but continued assisting the golf teams at Union High School. Being the consummate educator he was, he became a substitute teacher at Union and Camas High Schools.
In September of 2017, Larry and Susan moved to the desert outside of Palm Springs to enjoy their retirement together with their dog Truman.
Larry loved his Lord and served East Woods Presbyterian Church in Vancouver, as an elder. He was a contributing friend of Young Life, and led a Christian life of example and faith.
Larry is survived by his wife, Susan of Indio, CA; daughters, Lauri (Jeff) Wilson of Kalispell and Kerry (Daryl) Sid of Sunnyvale, CA; step-daughter, Lisa (Danny) Tehrani of Camas, WA; and step-son, Shayne Wilcox of Perkinsville, VT. He was the proud and caring grandfather to nine grandchildren: McKenna, Greg and Georgia Wilson, Cyrus and Elias Sid, Marissa and Audrey Tehrani, and Milo and Lucy Wilcox. He is also survived by two loving sisters, Sandy Asher of Helena, MT and Susan Jeys of Las Vegas, NV.
A memorial service will be held at East Woods Presbyterian Church in Vancouver, WA, Fri., Feb. 9th, at 7p.m.

Susan, Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. My fondest memories of him began on the golf course and the last time I saw him was on the golf course. I valued his friendship and the times we spent together on the Coach E Golf Tour. He was a kind and gentle man. Semper Fi, Larry.
