Larry Burkholder Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 1, 2024.
Boulder City - Larry Carl Burkholder, 84, passed away peacefully at the Southern Nevada State Veterans Home on March 27, 2024. He is survived by his wife, Susan Burkholder, daughters Teresa Kimmich and Jessica Rainier, and son Kevin Trebbe, three granddaughters-Brin, Eve and Raya--and a sister, Patricia Bersie.

Larry moved to northern Nevada from the California Bay Area in 1954. After graduating from Fernley High School in 1958, he attended Air Force basic training in San Antonio, Texas, returning to the Reno area as a member of the Nevada Air National Guard, until his retirement from the Guard in January, 2001. He served on active duty from 1968 to 1970 after the unit was called up during the Pueblo Crisis. He served TDY in Germany, Alaska and Honduras during his tenure with the Guard.

He and Susan married in May, 1965. While living in northern Nevada, Larry was an avid adult Scouter for Boy Scouts of America. He was also a Captain in the Lemmon Valley Volunteer Fire Department, a firefighter and EMT for the Fernley Volunteer Fire Department, and a member of the Washoe County Hasty Team.

Moving to southern Nevada in 1990, Larry worked in the Parks Department of the City of Henderson until his retirement in 2004. He continued his Scout leadership in southern Nevada, and after his retirement, enjoyed volunteering at the Alan Bible Visitor Center at Lake Mead. He and his sister Patricia have spent time researching their ancestry, with reams of information passed back and forth.

A memorial service will be held at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1900 Veterans Memorial Drive, Boulder City, Nevada on Friday, May 17, 2024 at 2:00 p,m. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Disabled American Veterans, or the Parkinsons Foundation.

During my last visit with my brother I shared my belief in Jesus Christ. I commented that after he passed that I would see him again. Responding in his typical dry-witty manner he said to me, "yeah, and you'll still be talking." (His observation being that he'd often had to endure my long-winded chatter). I treasure our last visit and look forward to seeing Larry again. Families are forever.
