Lawrence Frank Domingo

Age 70, of Albion, passed away Thursday, March 13, 2014, in Oaklawn Hospital, Marshall, Mich. after an extended illness. He was born in Albion, Mich. December 2, 1943 to Joseph V. Domingo and Mary (Lutzke) Domingo and is the oldest of eight children. On July 9, 1971 he married Janet, who he said, "made him the luckiest man in the world"
He graduated from Washington Gardner High School, class of 1962. He served his country as a member of the Air National Guard from 1964-1970, where he received recognition of outstanding performance.
Larry was known for his work ethic. His first job was at the neighborhood grocery at age 11, a job which he held through high school while also washing cars, mowing lawns, and babysitting.
Upon graduation from high school he went to work at the new Standard gas station on I-94, followed by employment at the Albion Malleable Iron Company.
While growing up, he learned skills from senior mentors in his family, so he decided to leave the Malleable and venture out on his own, forming Domingo's Quality Building & Cement Work. In 1978, he added a second business to his work day when he bought a building in the market place and opened the Frog Pond Deli, serving ice cream and sandwiches. He loved to cook and this was another dream fulfilled. After 25 years, his final job was building Classic Dry Cleaning & Tailoring in Marshall for his brother and upon completion, he bought the business. He was owner and operator for 21 years and enjoyed every day there until health issues forced his retirement in 2010. Larry has fond memories of growing up in Albion. He often talked of the events at Albion College where the community children were entertained and the youth group at the United Methodist Church, and especially the flying club where he learned about model airplanes. He remembers ice skating in the park and swimming in the river near the campus.
As a result, Larry was involved in the community. Serving on the building board of appeals, a member of the Lions and Elks Clubs, and participating in many Hospital Service League fundraisers over the years. One project he initiated was installing planters and benches along Superior Street involving the students of Starr Commonwealth and Albion High School shop classes in the construction. Things he loved: the Indy cars, especially the Andretti teams, professional football, music, gardening, cooking, dancing, the grandchildren, and a great dinner with good friends.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Janet, and son Mitchell (Karen) Lutzke, of Williamston,MI, daughter ,Wendy (Randy) Macomber of Marshall, MI, grandsons Matthew Lutzke of Houston, TX; Gregory Lutzke, Williamston, MI, Ryan Lien, United States Marine Corps, Tyler Lien of Marshall, MI and granddaughter Laura Lutzke of Williamston, MI. He also leaves a brother Joe Domingo (Jill) and sisters, Mary Jo Hagerman, Susie Clevenger (Bobbie) and Jennie Marsh (Brian) and beloved dog Pilar. He was proceeded in death by his father, Joseph Domingo, mother, Mary Cashner, brothers, James & John and sister Sandy Watson.
Larry's eyes have been donated to the Midwest Eye Bank. Cremation has taken place and, at Larry's request, there will be no services.
