Dad, it seems like yesterday I received the call you were gone! I cannot understand why you had to leave me so soon why without any warning. I suppose it makes sense based on our conversations but nonetheless devastating still to this day! I still feel you around me and I love you! My heart remains broken but I try every day to make some sense of it all. Thinking of you always! Marne Jo

Good bye my friend,

December 1, 2020

My deepest sympathy to the Hempen family. I worked for Larry for a short time at Qwest, he was always fair and honest. I will always remember his outstanding ability to compose a letter with just the right touch to express how he felt. He was a man of many words. I also had the pleasure of working with his son and uncle, who were also great men. I hope they both find peace during this difficult time.
My thoughts and prayers are with the Hempen family.

I had the pleasure of working with Larry at QWEST and he was always so much fun. The jokes he played on people were hilarious. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. Larry will be missed

Thank you Larry. You stepped in after mom died to watch over Ron and I. You always made us feel safe, and cared for. I loved every game of basketball, tennis match, and times we simply hung out together. You were a good man. Kind, funny, and generous. Thank you for being a great big brother.

To simply refer to Larry as my brother wouldn't begin to explain the rich, diverse and complex relationship we shared. Throughout my life he was at times my protector, my mentor, my coach, my teammate and eventually a true friend. Ours was a constantly evolving relationship and I cherish so many memories spread over a lifetime. I am forever grateful for the time I had with him and saddened that it has come to an end. There is a huge void in my life. Much love brother.

I can't believe what I am reading. Larry and I go back to 1998 I as a Union Steward and Larry as a 2nd Level Manager. I hope I am not infringing to much on the family and his friends. Larry was a man's, man. He was tough and fair. He told me he liked me as a friend, but hated me as a Union Steward. We used to really battle it out, but Larry was always fair. I can't believe he is gone. He was so tough. After he retired, I would run into him at the QT by the 6th drive yard. He would have his handy man truck and we would always catch up, on what was going on in our lives and the company and catch a few laughs. We were like lightning bolts in each others lives. I miss him.

To my neighbor who became my friend and then my family, words cannot describe the incredible vacancy that you have left in our lives. On the outside you were a hard boiled egg, but on the inside you were a soft fluffy marshmallow. Those who were lucky enough to have known that, and you, have been blessed. You were an amazing friend, neighbor, handyman, father, grandfather, and chosen family member whose legacy will live on through memories and stories. I’m sure there was quite a party upon your arrival, with music, singing, dancing, and food galore! Keep a protective eye on all the grands down here, leave a light on the path for the rest of us, and for F*%¥ sake, don’t park in my spot! Also, to answer your question: No, I have not kissed an old fat guy yet today. You are and will continue to be missed. All my love. My deepest condolences to your family and loved ones.

Off to work with Grandpa!

I should be having to write in memorial guest book - this all happened to soon - too fast and so unexpected . You have done more for our family than anyone could ever imagine - you were a great father figure as well as an amazing grandpa to all these kids !! Although I want to say we still need and want you here I know that’s selfish and there were other plans for you . Thank you do everything you have done and we will miss you so much !
To my mom and larry’s family , I’m so sorry for such a big loss

Larry taught me about phone stuff, people stuff, and friend stuff. I will miss his humor and humanity. I will miss him answering the phone with "Hey Stupid" every year when I called on his birthday. Mostly, I will miss knowing my dear friend is around.

Love and sympathies to his family and everyone touched by Larry.
