Larry Luing Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 19, 2016.
Larry Lee Luing Berkeley College patriarch Larry Lee Luing, 86, of Boca Raton, Fla., died on Nov. 17, 2016. A longtime resident of New Jersey, he raised his family in Oakland and Kinnelon and enjoyed his summers in Stone Harbor. Born April 24, 1930, in Rhodes, Iowa, to Donald and Ethel Luing, Larry was a young entrepreneur, selling milk, strawberries, greeting cards, garden seeds and household items door-to-door. In 1951, he graduated from the University of Iowa and enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he was assigned to the 143rd Field Artillery Battalion of the 40th Division in Korea. After the war, Larry landed a job in the sales department at the Gregg Division of the McGraw-Hill Book Company, where he was responsible for selling textbooks to business schools around the country. In 1965 he joined The Berkeley School as vice president of administration, and ultimately became president and chairman of the board. Under Larry's leadership, the school earned regional accreditation and the license to award associate and bachelor's degrees and by the time of his retirement in 2001 had been renamed Berkeley College. Larry was involved in various other business ventures during his lifetime. He had ownership interests in the Concord Motor Inn, Keystone Court apartments and Chateau guest house in Stone Harbor, N.J. He built The Leeward, a 24-unit condominium complex, also in Stone Harbor. He operated Stafford Hall, a secretarial school in Summit, N.J., and was a partial owner of the Taylor Schools, London School of Publishing and London School of Insurance. After retirement, Larry traveled extensively, including two years aboard his motor sailor, Quixote. He celebrated New Year's holidays on each of the seven continents. He was the author of two books and a study guide. Larry had a quick wit and a generous loving heart. He was always ready to help those in need. Larry lived life to the fullest and in his later days had absolutely no regrets. Larry is survived by his husband, Dario Espinosa; his sons, Kevin, Randy, Timothy and Brian; his grandchildren, Kelsey, Maxwell, Heather, Courtney, Brett, Erica, Allison, Matthew, Cassandra, Tyler, Danielle and Kayleigh, and his sister, Lois Cerka, of Nevada, Iowa. Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday at M. John Scanlan Funeral Home, Pompton Plains, N.J. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at the United Methodist Church, Butler, N.J. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Larry may be made to the American Lung Association or Boca Helping Hands.

My wife Gina and son Zachary join me in extending our heartfelt condolences to Dario and all of Larry's family. He was an amazing man, and his passing a terrible loss for all of us.

I first met Larry almost exactly 25 years ago as I was embarking on a new career in yachting. I had the pleasure of taking over command of Larry's sailboat, Island Star. A few years later, Island Star was replaced by a larger yacht...Quixote, and the start of a grand new adventure began. I had the privilege and pleasure of working closely with Larry to make that dream a reality. Lots of fantastic memories of places visited, new friendships made and great experiences enjoyed by all. Being a significant part of making that adventure happen is a memory I will always cherish. Larry and Dario remained dear friends long after my working for Larry had ended.

We have lost a great man...we shall all miss Larry. Jeff, Gina and Zachary Hardgrave

Isabelle and I would like to send our warmest regards and condolence to Dario and Larry's family.

I met Larry more than 20 years ago in the Caribbean when he generously engaged me as the mate aboard his yacht 'Quixote' that was about to embark upon a world tour. As one of the crew of Quixote, I was fortunate to know Larry and to be part of the adventure of his world tour from the Caribbean to New Zealand. I am indebted to Larry as I met my wife during this tour and have many wonderful memories and friendships that are still strong thanks to Larrys introduction and kindness. Larry remained a contact and much valued acquaintance ever since and we will sorely miss the chance to meet up again as we had become accustomed to do, whenever we crossed paths around the world.
With sincere regards from Isabelle and Clive.

Larry was a lifelong friend to my brother Bud Edel. Larry and Bud met as teenagers in downtown Marshalltown where they both worked. Those beginning connections continued and deepened. Larry and Bud entered the army together in 1951. They served in Korea. They returned home to start their individual lives. Bud was best man in Larry and Millie's wedding and became Godfather to number two son, Brian. They continued to keep in close touch--periodic visits, phone calls, letters. Bud died in 2003, but Larry continued to faithfully remember us--Bud's family. We are saddened by Larry's death, but know as Larry himself said--"I've had a good life and I'm ready to go."
Our deepest sympathy to Kevin, Randy, Tim, and Brian and to Larry's partner Dario Espinosa.
We shall miss our dear and loyal friend Larry Lee Luing
