Larry Moyer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 26 to Nov. 27, 2022.
A longtime resident of Marin, Larry Moyer (79) passed away on November 15, 2022 after losing his battle with Multiple Myeloma.

Larry was born in San Francisco, attended St. Anne Elementary School and St. Ignatius College Prep for the first two years of high school before moving to Burlingame and transferring to Junipero Serra High School. It was at Serra High School where Larry discovered his love of basketball as a member of the school team for both his junior and senior years. He then went to University of San Diego on a full basketball scholarship, where he played with longtime friend Bernie Bickerstaff and others under coach Phil Woolpert. He would proudly reminisce that he started every game for all four years. After receiving his Bachelor's of Administration at USD, Larry continued his education at University of San Francisco receiving his MA degree in Administration and Counseling.

After graduation Larry moved to Marin County, where he began a high school teaching, administration and counseling career at Tamalpais H. S. and later at Sir Francis Drake H. S. He soon began refereeing basketball. He officiated high school, junior college (1970s), NCAA Divisions 1 & 2, and the ABA. He even helped out his son's CYO basketball games when needed. Larry was inducted into the Marin Athletic Hall of Fame as a basketball referee in 2014. His referee career spanned over 50 years.

In addition to being involved in the Golden Gate Officials Bureau (GGOB), Larry was also an officials' observer during the Pac 10 days for Cal Berkeley, and worked for the NBA as an officials' observer for all Golden State Warrior's home games for 3 years. In 2016, Ed Rush presented Larry with the "COURT CLUB Elite Achievement Award in Recognition of Excellence and the Spirit of Giving Back" in Las Vegas.

After teaching, Larry worked as a Special Services Manager at Pacific Bell, and as a Carrier Relations Manager for US Sprint until he began his career in the insurance industry. He and his wife own Moyer Insurance Services, Inc. in Novato and also work closely with Hindsight Insurance Services' home office in the East Bay.

Larry is survived by his wife Judy Moyer, children: Mark Moyer (Julie), Alison Allred (Scott), Brady Moyer (Jennifer), Lisa Melendez (Bernie), and Mike Balak (Tiffany) and his 12 grandchildren: Madison (19) & Matthew (16) Moyer; Mason (20) & Brandon (18) Allred; Cole (9), Wyatt (7) & Dylan (4) Moyer; Sierra (21), Amanda (15) & Marissa (13) Melendez; and Brittany (21) & Blake Balak (18). His brothers: Ronald Moyer (Janice) and children Ryan, Timothy & Kimberly Moyer; and Michael Moyer (Monique) and children Meghan and Lee.

In 1991, Larry and his wife Judy organized Hoops for Children, a basketball tournament that benefited the Marin CASA, a program for abused and neglected children. During those 17 years, and with the help of over 100 volunteers each year, they were able to net over $300,000. Mr. Moyer was my typing teacher at Francis Drake High School. He was very nice, and I learned so much in his class! Whenever I type on a keyboard, I think of him! My grade for him is A+

We have many wonderful memories of our tennis days and partys at Rolling Hills Club in our younger days and the great battles we had. Larrys internet jokes provided me and his many friends with lots of laughs and smiles over the years.
RIP Larry

A wonderful smile and sense of humor. Remembering days in the gym with Moyer the ref!
A kind and humble man...easy to connect with human to human...even after years apart!
A loss...as he was one of the truly good people.
Hugs to the family from the Nelson clan!

I can't remember how many games we played for CASA. Too many to count. Larry called every year to say, get your team together and see you at NHS. Larry and I became long time insurance friends. I could always expect a call from Larry asking about where to place a difficult risk. Most of the time we just talked about family. Asking how the boys were doing or seeing Mark at Cross Fit. Larry knew what was important. Family first! Miss you Larry.

Larry was a true student of the game of basketball. He gave to the game as a player, an official, and an evaluator. He was excellent at all three, and the game will miss him, as will his many friends.

Larry, it was a privelidge and honor knowing you. Our long phone calls that start about work always end talking about our personal lives and sports. Your kind soul always lifted my mood. Thank you for your friendship, you are truly missed.

Officiated with Larry in the college ranks for many years; would see him at Reno from time to time when I played in tennis tournaments there in the spring/summer. Always a smile and kind word; extremely friendly man; am sure he touched many with his wonderful charm and easy manner. Ray Savorn, Rancho Cordova.

I met Larry in the fall of 1966 when I was a freshman at USF living on the 5th floor of Phelan Annex. Larry was the RA. I remember the late night bed checks to make sure I was where I was supposed to be. I really enjoyed playing intramural basketball with him. Much later, I would see him in Novato where we both lived, sometimes at church and we´d talk about how our kids were doing, or at my son´s basketball game when he was reffing. He was a big man with a big heart and it was an honor to know him. RIP, Larry, and love and prayers to your family.

Met Larry in summer of 1958 after he had moved to Burlingame. We talked and it was strongly suggested that he attend Serra High School in San Mateo and play basketball. He did so. He thrived there. The rest, as they say, is history. Larry was always affable, witty and loyal. Great person. He is missed for sure.
