Laurence "Larry" Eugene Stratton, 84, passed away peacefully on April 6, 2025, in
Woodburn, Oregon, just two days before his 85th birthday. Born on April 8, 1940, in Astoria, Oregon to Ansel Stratton and Opal Hagguist, Larry was raised by his beloved Aunt Mina Ehlers.
Larry proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for four years, beginning with boot camp in Texas, then stationed in Mississippi and Germany. His time in service was a source of great pride throughout his life, especially as two of his three children were born during his posting in Germany. Following his military service, Larry embarked on a long and dedicated career with the U.S. Postal Service, where he held many positions, including Supervisor of Postal Operations, before retiring. Larry was supportive of his children while they were participating in wrestling, baseball, softball, and other sports and activities. Larry coached Gene's baseball team for three years, then coached Shirley's softball team for a couple years. Larry was an Umpire and later became an Umpire in Chief.
Larry's life was rich with passions and pursuits. He had a curious spirit and traveled extensively across 49 states, Canada, and Mexico. He always wanted to know what was over the next hill. He loved RVing, dancing, camping and fishing. Larry found great joy in leatherwork and woodworking, generously giving away many beautiful creations made with love from his shop. A man of many talents, Larry also earned a brown belt in karate, was an avid reader, enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, and had a particular love for college football. He was a devoted fan of the Oregon State Beavers.
Throughout his life, Larry demonstrated a deep commitment to helping others. He donated ten gallons of blood to the American Red Cross over the years-a legacy that continues through his stepdaughter's efforts to match his contributions.
Larry's family was a central pillar of his life. He was married for 21 years to Dianna Drummond before finding lasting companionship with Geraldine Louise Stratton, whom he married and shared 42 adventurous years with. Larry is survived by his wife Geraldine; daughter Shirley Kunz and son-in-law Tom Kunz of McDonough, Georgia; son Eugene "Gene" Stratton and daughter-in-law Cathy Stratton of Troutdale, Oregon; stepson Tracy Long (and Gene) of Bremerton, Washington; stepson Todd Long (and Ivy) of Forest Grove; and stepdaughter Diane Seaton (and David) of Mulino, Oregon. He also leaves behind five granddaughters, six great-grandchildren, nephew James Hilts III and Tammy; as well as close friends John and Shirley Vallery of Forest Grove, Oregon-friends since they were all just thirteen years old.
Larry was predeceased by his infant son Alan Stratton at just ten months old and by his sister Darlene Jenny Harmon (married to Rick). His pride in family extended back generations; he often spoke with admiration about his father's service aboard the USS Enterprise during World War II.
A memorial service with military honors will be held on May 16, 2025, 11:00 a.m. PST at Willamette National Cemetery, located at 11800 SE Mt. Scott Blvd., Portland, Oregon 97086.
Larry's outgoing nature, generosity, helpfulness, and sense of humor touched all who knew him. His memory will live on through the countless lives he impacted with kindness and craftsmanship. May those who loved him find comfort in remembering a life so well lived.
