Laura Lee Romp

Laura Lee (Peeps) Romp (nee Schmitt), 96 of Birmingham, AL. died peacefully February 1, 2018 at her home after a short illness. Laura was born July 15, 1921 in Berea, Ohio. She grew up on Cleveland's West Side and Put-in-Bay, Ohio. After graduating from North Olmsted High School she married the love of her life, Robb Romp. In 1957 Laura and Robb purchased what is now Romp's Water Port in Vermilion, Ohio. With the help of their two sons they developed the property into one of the most beautiful marina's on Lake Erie. Laura loved boating and taking care of her family. She was a born caregiver. In the Fall of 1959 she helped establish the Vermilion Booster Club and became the first president. She was a past member of the Vermilion Boat Club and a member of the Vermilion, United Church of Christ, Congregational. Laura and Robb moved to Eustis, Florida in 1970 but always spent time in Vermilion during the Summers. After the death of Robb in 1996 she returned to Vermilion and resided there until she moved to Birmingham, AL. in 2011 to be closer to her son Tom's family. She is survived by her children, Tom and Martha Jane Romp of Birmingham, AL and Bill and Molly Romp of Vermilion, Ohio and Mount Dora, Florida; grandchildren, Katy Romp-Innes (Tom), Carrie Romp-Gabriel (John), both of Vermilion Ohio, Courtney Debolt of Mount Dora, Florida, Dr. Robb Romp (Katie) of Birmingham, AL, and Heather Romp of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; eight great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Robb N. Romp; her parents, Roland and Elsie Schmitt; and four brothers. There will be a Memorial Service in Vermilion, Ohio at a later date.
