LAURENCE COFFIN Obituary

Laurence Edmondston Coffin, Jr.  
Beloved husband of Beatriz de Winthuysen, father of Thomas and Alisa, passed away on February 15, 2018, at the age of 89. He is remembered with love by his wife and children, his daughter-in-law, Jolynn, his son-in-law, Oswaldo, his six grandchildren and his extended family and friends. Laurence was a decorated Army veteran, having served in the Allied Occupation of Japan. He attended Virginia Tech and Harvard University. He was a landscape architect and a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects. He practiced his profession with distinction in New York, Chicago, and Washington, DC, with his wife and partner Beatriz, in their firm Coffin & Coffin. Laurence taught landscape architecture and urban design at Michigan State University, and The Catholic University of America. His former students sent him greetings for many years. He traveled extensively for his work, including Iceland, Japan, and Canberra, Australia. Laurence was a member of the Cosmos Club of Washington, DC.  Burial service will be at Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, VA, February 17, 2018 at 12 noon.

Dear Bea - I am so sorry to hear of Larry's death and so glad that we were able to present you both with the ASLA Lifetime Achievement Award in time for him to enjoy the honor. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you in this tough time.

I know your father was a wonderful person, even though I never had the privilege of meeting him. I know because his wonderful spiritual character shines through the eyes of his daughter. No doubt, his wonderful character has continued on into the next world.
