Laurie Andersen Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 5, 2024.
Laurie Lynne Andersen, 84, of Herndon, Virginia passed away on January 11, 2024.

Laurie was born August 13, 1939 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to parents Evelyn J. (Lyngstad) and Laurence V. Knutson. Following the death of her father and remarriage of her mother to Glen W. Anderson (who adopted Laurie), the family moved to Pine Island, MN until 1955 and then to Lake City, MN. Following the death of Glen in 1960, her mother moved to Rochester, MN and later married Leo J. DeFrang.

Laurie attended Lincoln High School in Lake City and graduated in 1957. She attended Winona State University for one year, where she met and married George Berg in 1958. They later divorced in 1981. Laurie returned to Winona State in 1973 and obtained a degree in Business Administration and Sociology in 1974. After graduation, Laurie went to work at IBM in Rochester, where she worked as a programmer, programming manager, system analyst and software planner over the next 20 years.

On October 2, 1982, she married David A. Andersen in Rochester. In 1992, both Dave and Laurie took early retirement from IBM and moved full-time to their vacation home in Hayward, Wisconsin. Both Dave and Laurie became Real Estate Broker/Sales Associates and sold property in the Hayward area until 2002. In 2006, they purchased a winter home in Green Valley, Arizona. Her beloved husband Dave passed away on October 10, 2007. Within a few years, Laurie moved to Green Valley full-time until March of 2022, when she moved to Herndon, Virginia to be near her daughter Judy and her family.

Over the course of her life, Laurie was very active in numerous civic volunteer organizations. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi in Rochester, supported the March of Dimes and Red Cross, and was very active in the Lions Club in both Hayward and then Green Valley, where she served on many committees and held numerous officer positions. She received the Lions Club International Leadership Award and the Lions Clubs International President's Award. In Green Valley, she also volunteered in numerous community organizations. She received the Presidential Volunteer Service Award multiple times. Laurie enjoyed numerous sports and was an avid Green Bay Packers fan.

She is survived by her son David Berg of Ocean Shores, Washington and daughter Judith (Richard) Bjornaas of Herndon, Virginia; stepchildren Scott (Kris) Andersen of Minnetonka, MN and Barbara (Rich) Nascak of Winona, MN; ten grandchildren and one great grandchild. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband David Andersen, and her son Daniel Berg.

A Memorial Service is scheduled for Tuesday, August 13, 2024 at 11:00am in the Chapel at Christ United Methodist Church at 400 5th Avenue SW Rochester, MN 55902. After the Memorial, she will join her beloved husband David at Grandview Memorial Gardens in Rochester. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation to the Hayward Lions Club or the American Cancer Society.

I always remember cousin Laurie coming to our house and visiting with my mom (her Aunt Joy) and the fun times they always had together.

I will always remember Laurie's beautiful smile and lovely laugh. She will be missed.
