Laurie Burr Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 17, 2023.
We are sad to announce the passing of our daughter, Laurie Burr, at the age of 52 on January 11, 2023. She was born with Spina Bifida and had many surgeries along the way. She was able to overcome many of her difficulties due in part to Toronto Sick Kids, Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital (Hugh McMillian Center), Sunnybrook and many other facilities and Doctors.
She is survived by her mother Patricia and father John (Cathy) along with her brother Michael (Kerri), Aunts Kathy, Barb (John) and nieces Jayden, McKayla and cousins Steven, Kevin and Todd.
During her teen years she participated in Horseback Riding for the Handicapped at Hoskins Stables as well as sports activities with the Durham Hotwheels. She also enjoyed a trip to England along with a group from members of Variety Village and while there, was able to meet Prince Andrew and Fergie. In addition, she graduated from Vanier Secondary School.
She lived on her own in a handicapped apartment for 28 years at Northview Meadow Co-op. During this time, she met many wonderful nurses and PSW's who, with their help, were able to bring her longevity and happiness. Her last 4 years were spent at Thorntonview LTC Nursing Home where she was able to receive the care that helped her to enjoy her remaining days.
Special thanks has to be given to the Nurses and PSW's on the Corbett wing of Thornton view for the kindness they showed towards Laurie during her last weeks of palliative care, especially to two wonderful nurses. Judith, the dayshift nurse who kept us informed as to Laurie's well being and her night nurse, Elvi ,who worked a double shift to stay with her during her final hours in the early morning of January 11th.
Cremation has already taken place and a private family service will be held later this year. If you wish to honor Laurie's memory, please consider a donation to the Charity of Your Choice.

I was a PSW of Laurie´s for about 13 yrs ... we had our laughs ... she loved to play crazy eights ... we would play game after game .... After her care .... Also she like to get her nails done ... she loved it when I called her ducky ... and said it was a nickname name she had when she was younger. I have missed her a lot over the years so sorry I didn´t keep in touch .. but thought of her often . So sorry for your loss Pat ,John and family

Laurie & I known each other since 1984 in high school!!! We were best friends. I would spend a night or two at her parents or at her apartment. We would go and walk to the Five Points Mall and hang out. We would always sit together and talk about anything!!! I am so going to miss her so much!!!

Laurie was a lovely friend from summer camp, she had a spontaneous giggle, that would go on and on, til you had to giggle yourself! A big heart that she wore on her sleeve, I am smiling now as I write this, looking down from Heaven and no doubt, giggling! Until we meet again, Laurie xo

John, Pat, and family.
We were so sorry to hear of your loss. Even though we had our girls a lot longer than we thought we would, it is never enough time. We have fond memories of those younger years when all the kids were together. They were good times. We hope those happy memories will get you through this sad time. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. Sincerely, Wayne and Janis Junkin
