Dr. Mashford (at the time) was my honours supervisor at St. Vincents, leading a project into the use of activated charcoal in opioid overdoses using radiolabelled morphine as a proximate. He was also a lecturer in toxicology in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Melbourne, which is where I first met him as a student. He was a somewhat distant supervisor to a mere honous student given his other responsibilities, but was always approachable and made himself available with kind words of advice or direction in research - a fatherly figure for all those working under his direction. His clinical expertise was spot-on, and he was the go-to person for complicated envenomation cases where he would liaise with treating physicians all over Australia, and I'm sure he saved many lives. He, and the other MBBS people in the Department of Pharmacology inspired me to put myself through medicine later on, and subsequently qualify as an FRACP clinical pharmacologist. To me, he took on the mantle of the great Dr. Struan Sutherland, a giant in the world of envenomation and the developer of so many antivenes we rely on in Australia given our outsized number of creatures that can kill you in this country (including the funnel web and redback spiders!) RIP Laurie.

A true gentleman who will be sadly missed. Having worked with him for almost 15 years I got to know Laurie quite closely and he indeed was a learned physician.
