Captain Lawrence Patrick Davis Sr. (Captain Larry), age 69, passed away on September 16, 2024, surrounded by loved ones.

Captain Larry, a legendary sword fisherman, protector of Florida's coastal waters, and mechanical genius, was born in Washington, D.C., on February 16, 1955. At the age of 1, he moved to Fort Lauderdale, where he was raised by James Joseph and Virginia Grumman Davis. His proximity to the water shaped his lifelong passion for the sea and all things mechanical.

Throughout his life, Captain Larry dedicated himself to preserving the fisheries, fishing, and running large vessels. In his later years, he managed a marina. From the Dry Tortugas to the Gulf of Mexico, the Atlantic Ocean, and even the waters where the Titanic sank, his adventures on the water were boundless. His expertise as a fisherman and his commitment to safeguarding marine life made him a well-respected figure across the shores. Beyond the water, Captain Larry was a genius with anything mechanical. He could fix engines, build race cars, and race them in the 1/4 mile, earning admiration for his exceptional ability to fix anything that came his way.

Lawrence was happiest when he was on the water, taking friends and family out on his boats to fish, water ski, and explore. He had a special knack for finding dolphins, delighting in sharing these moments with others. His love for the ocean wasn't just about the work-it was about sharing its beauty and wonder with those he loved.

Lawrence is survived by the mother of his children, Karen, and his loving family: his twins, Lawrence Patrick Jr. and Laren Patricia, and his son Andrew Edward and daughter-law-Jennifer, 9 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren. He lived a fulfilling life and cherished his family deeply.

As he wished, his ashes will be scattered at sea in a private ceremony, allowing him to return to the waters he so deeply loved.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Captains for Clean Water or Friends of Everglades, two organizations dedicated to preserving the waterways and marine life that Captain Larry cherished.

When I owned Parrot Cove Marina Larry started out as a tenant and he immediately started taking care of things around the marina, the man could fix anything. As far as I was concerned as long as Larry was in the marina I knew that the marina was in good hands, he looked after everyone´s boats in all kinds of weather he even rode out a few hurricanes in the marina. He will be missed, he was a good person and a steward of nature.

The day his twins were born, I was there! When he couldn't find a mate to go fishing, I volunteered! The story became legendary: "The best catch he ever had." The Last time he took me out for a ride in his boat, he called out to the dolphins. They circled the boat as if they knew him, jumping and playing when he called them. I called him the dolphin whisperer.
