Lawrence Evans Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from May 23 to May 25, 2016.
Lawrence Benjamin "Bud" Evans, Jr.

Our husband, father and friend passed away peacefully on May 19, 2016.

"Bud" was born March 4, 1930 in Tallahassee, Florida to parents Dr. Lawrence Evans, Sr. and Lura Bowen Evans. He was raised in Tallahassee and was always proud that he was a second generation graduate of Leon High School following both of his parents. He was active in sports at Leon (baseball and football). He was an avid golfer all of his life introduced to the game in the early 1940's by his Dad at Capital City Country Club. He was most proud of his time in the marching band and orchestra at Leon. He was a trumpet player of some ability and performed with a swing band at venues all over north Florida during those years and even into his college days.

After high school, he attended Florida State University and transferred to the University of Florida where he received a Bachelor's Degree in Architecture and was a member of the SAE Fraternity. Despite the dual college resume he was always an avid Seminole fan.

After college, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Japan during the Korean conflict.

While in high school, he met his soul mate and the love of his life, Mary Kate "Kitty" Miller. Throughout their over 64-year marriage, she was always the joy of his life. Bud and Kitty raised five children in Tallahassee who all survive him: Laura Nixon (Nick) of Tallahassee, LeeAnn Brock (Dewey) of Quincy, FL, Larry Evans (Lynn) of Johns Creek, GA, Les Evans of Tallahassee, and Lis Newton (Billy) of Cartersville, GA. Additionally he is survived by 4 grandchildren: Andy Brock (Amanda), Laurie Lee Newton Morris (Justin), Ben Newton and Carter Evans. He is also survived by 2 great grandchildren Jenni and Eli Brock. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Patty Maddox.

Bud was a distinguished architect designing many public and private buildings but devoted the final 29 years of his career to designing churches. In that span he designed over 300 churches all over the southeast , including many renovations. His last and perhaps his crowning achievement was the Bradfordville First Baptist Church.

He was a humble and dignified man. He was totally dedicated to Kitty and loved spending time with his children, either with his boys on the golf course or with any of them when they came to visit. He really loved playing with his golfing buddies (The Silver Buzzards) at Golden Eagle.

His time here, while full of achievement, acclaim and success seems much too short for those of us who loved him and will miss him. His was truly a life well led. "Fairways and greens", husband, father and friend, your legacy will live on through each of us.

The family would like to thank the administration and staff at Brookdale Senior Living on Centre Pointe Blvd. in Tallahassee and the kind and caring people of Covenant Hospice.

A graveside service is scheduled for 11:00 AM on Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at Culley's MeadowWood Memorial Park, 700 Timberlane Road, Tallahassee.

My dear Lis,
I am sorry I am just finding out about your loss of your dad! I have very fond memories of your dad taking us to the Grove Park on Sunday's for brunch when I went home with you from college. He lived a very full life and was blessed to have you as a daughter. I know you share fond memories of times you spent together.
Love to you,
Cindy

To Kitty, Laura, LeeAnn, Larry, Les and Lis...I am so sorry for your loss. My memories of Bud go back to the days at Leon High School and FSU. Bud was a close friend of my brother, Bob Lee. He, Bob, Gene Fitchner, Ralph Hartsfield, along with several other musical friends formed and played in the swing bank. Bud lived one block from our home and I use to walk through his yard on the way home from Leon, stop and visit. Although I was 3 years younger, Bud always treated me as a friend. I often tagged along with these musically endowed guys...what a treat for a young kid. Kitty and I were high school class mates and graduated in the Class of 1951. I so regret that I didn't spend time with Bud during his last days, reminiscing about those early years and talking about my brother who passed away several years ago. And I would like to thank you for his service to our country.

What a kind and gentle man. I remember his calm demeanor even when his house was full of teenagers and their friends.

Larry,
There are no words to express how sorry I was to hear about the passing of your beloved father. Please accept my sincere and heartfelt condolences and extend these feelings to your entire family. May God bless and comfort you at this time.

"He spoke well who said that graves are the footprints of Angels." Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Your father truly was an Angel on Earth and has been called home.

John 14:2-3
2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

How very fitting that he spent the last 29 years of his life designing churches and now he has gone home to be with his Heavenly Father, "The Ultimate Architect."

Our deepest sympathy to Kitty and the family. The neighborhood benefited from having Bud as an officer when Thomasville Road was widened. He will be missed. Roberta and David Mann
