Lawrence (Larry) M. Gifford, M.D., of South Portland, Maine and New York City, New York, passed on peacefully at home on September 7, 2024, surrounded by loved ones.

Born on May 13, 1937, in Gloversville, NY, Larry received his undergraduate degree from Albany College of Pharmacy and his medical degree from Albany Medical College. Larry subsequently practiced internal medicine in Albany, NY for many years. Later in his career, Larry held various roles in the pharmaceutical industry with positions at Organon Pharmaceuticals, Genentech and eventually retiring from Johnson and Johnson.

In addition to his love of medicine and research, Larry was deeply involved with his churches, Holy Apostles Episcopal Church in New York City and Trinity Episcopal Church in Portland, Maine.

Larry was a passionate and avid quilter, creating beautiful pieces that were not only expressions of his artistic talent, but also reflecting love for family and friends. His quilts, some of which are currently on display internationally, were created for loved ones, celebrating important life events such as marriages and births.

Larry is survived by his daughters, Debbie (Timothy Jalbert) Casey of Boxford, MA, Karen (James) Cummings of Franconia, NH and Jennifer (Tom) Oldaker of Bainbridge, GA, his son, Drew Gifford (Jenny May Claremont), of Albany, New York, his sister Sharon (Gifford) Wallace of St. Petersburgh, Florida, 7 grandchildren, a great granddaughter, a nephew, and a large community of friends at Sable Lodge in South Portland, Maine and in New York City. Larry's warmth, humor, and creativity will be missed by all who knew him.

A memorial service will be held at Sable Lodge in South Portland with a funeral and internment at Holy Apostles Church in New York City to follow at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Holy Apostles Church (via Zelle at [email protected]) or to Hospice of Southern Maine.

Rest in peace, Dad. Your legacy of compassion and care for others will continue in our hearts and minds forever.

I adored Larry for his joy and his love of so many different things. Always with a smile and a kind word. His ability to speak on so many different things always held my rapt attention and he has been missed in New York by me and all who knows him. Rest in peace my dear friend. You will always be in my heart. It was a privilege to know you.
