Lawrence Griffin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 30, 2009.
OLD TOWN - Lawrence Joseph Griffin, 86, passed away peacefully Monday, Sept. 28, 2009, surrounded by family. He was born Sept. 7, 1923, the son of James Lawrence and Mary Josephine (O'Connor) Griffin, both Irish immigrants. He grew up in Jamaica Plain, Mass., and graduated from Boston College High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943. He served in France, Belgium and Germany as a member of the 158th Combat Engineers. He was being re-deployed to Japan when the World War II ended. Lawrence graduated from Boston College in 1949 under the G.I. Bill. He then obtained a master's degree in psychology from Fordham University. He worked as a psychologist in youth services in Massachusetts and Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. After reading Thomas Merton's "The Seven Story Mountain," he became a trappist monk. He left the monastery after two years and went to Fort Kent to teach high school. In Fort Kent, he met his wife, Lorraine, and started a family. He left Fort Kent to attend Harvard University, where he earned a master's degree in education. He taught at Orono High School for 29 years, retiring in 1988. He taught for six years at University College after retirement. Lawrence early on discovered the value of exercise for physical and mental well-being and ran his first marathon at age 55. He was a man of strong faith who strove to translate faith into action. He was a hospice volunteer, among other volunteer activities. Lawrence is survived by his wife of 53 years, Lorraine; and his children, Mary and her husband, Early Cooper, Joseph, Catherine, Paul and his fiancee, Julia Malloy, Eileen and her husband, Carter Friend, Michael and Patty. He has three grandchildren, beloved and perfect in his eyes, Keely and Marlee Griffin, and Connor Friend. He is also survived by one brother, John R. Griffin and his wife, Barbara; his sister-in-law, Connie Griffin; many nieces and nephews. His brother, James, predeceased him. Friends may call 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Thursday at Resurrection Parish, Holy Family, Old Town, with the Rev. Bill Labbe, celebrant. Immediately after the service all are invited to a light luncheon and continued fellowship at the parish hall. Interment will be at a later date at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Bangor. Memorial contributions may be made to Catholic Relief Services, 228 Lexington St., Baltimore, MD 21201.

Please know that my sympathy and prayers are with your family. I will always appreciate the sincere caring with which Mr. Griffin taught me Physics. He was very patient when I had so many questions and took the time to explain things very thoroughly. It helped me greatly when I got to college and studied biomechanical forces of movement in the human body. I know he was a blessing to many, many young people over the years. May you feel God's love and strength at this difficult time, and know the hope that is in Christian faith.

Hello and my deepest sympathies. I will always fondly remember Mr. Griffin both because he awakened my love of physics and because if I had to point to one single point in my life that has shaped the path I have walked since; it would be a 10 minute conversation that I had with Mr. Griffin. It was a simple conversation about what I would study when I went to college - he encouraged me to become a Mechanical Engineer. It was a perfect fit for me and has led me on a grand set of adventures around the world, I met my wife on one of those adventures and have two amazing children with her, a son and a daughter. So you see I owe many of the amazing memories, experiences, and blessings I have in my life to that one short caring conversation I had with Mr. Griffin. He and you will forever remain in my thoughts and prayers with the deepest gratitude. Bob McCormick, OHS class of 1986 (Henderson, NV)

Larry Griffin was easily one of the finest people I've known. I had the honor of teaching with him at Orono High School for quite a few years. He was that rare combination of real guy and highly spiritual man. I am a better person for having known him, and I am sure that many of the people who were in contact with him through his long life feel the same way. Larry deeply touched everyone I knew in common with him. He was kind, generous, and "loved his neighbors." If there's a heaven, you can bet that's where he is right now.

I remember Mr. Griffin as an outstanding physics teacher at OHS. His command of the subject, obvious decency, and sense of humor made his class one of my favorites at OHS.

I still remember a correction Mr. Griffin made to one my lab reports over 30 years ago--a correction that had nothing to do with physics. Rather, the correction involved the English language. I remain favorably impressed that Mr. Griffin caught the mistake, buried in a sea of my nonsense, and took the time to address the matter in his annotations.

My condolences to Mr. Griffin's family

This is for the family, but for Mary and Paul because I know you personally. My deepest condolences on the loss of your father. It is hard to lose someone you have looked up to all your life. Be there for your mom, she will need you now. Take care of each other, and may God bless you all.

I, too, like many others remember Mr. Griffin as "Gramps." I smile just writing this because he was just that to all students--a grandfather type. He was always a very kind, fair, and gentle man. He will be greatly missed--my thoughts and prayers, to you, his family. He was a wonderful man.

Mr. Griffin was my teacher at OHS. He inspired me to attend college with the intention of teaching physics. As life goes, I went off in another career direction.

I always knew that he was a good man. He led students by example and he always made me feel like he truly cared about my future. I had many talks with him while student-teaching with Carl Gridley.

While reading his obituary it made me sad on two fronts. One, because this world lost a fine man, and one, because I never knew his impressive past until now. I never knew that he had a wife and children, I never knew that he was a WW2 veteran, I never knew that he attended Harvard.

I encourage all teachers to tell students more about your past so that students don't discover your human-side when they read your obituary.

I wish to let his family know that I too will miss him. He inspired my life. He gave me a love of science. He helped teach me to be a quieter and more patient man.

I am sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

My condolences go out to a man who apparently inspired so many people and I only know or knew of him because of his daughter. His daughter changed my life and inspired me to stay and fight for my children and my life. He obviously taught his children well. God bless and my prayers and thoughts are with you.

I feel blessed to have crossed paths with Mr. Griffin in a number of ways: first as a physics student at OHS, then as a colleague at University College (along with my Dad), and now as someone who lives where he grew up. I think of him whenever I drive on Allandale Road! He was a source of much appreciated encouragement in high school and beyond, and I try to emulate him as an educator. My condolences to all the family.

I am one of many whose life was touched (and enhanced) by Mr. Griffin; my favorite quote: "I've got as good a sense of humor as anyone, but I won't tolerate silliness". Great man who made a difference...our thoughts are with the family.

Mr. Griffin was my coach when I played farm league baseball in Old Town.(Roy Bros)back in the early 70's. He was a kind , nice man who left a lasting impression on me . Just thinking of those days make me smile , and I realize that I learned so much from him , not baseball, but the way you should treat people.
He was a good man.
My deepest condolences to all of the family.

This message is for Patti. My name is Deacon Hector Raymond and I assisted at the funeral for my oldest Brother Mack at Holy Family a few weeks ago. The beautiful French Song "Jirai toujour" was sung. It was the first time I heard it and I looked it up and I saw that you recorded it. I just can't get it out of my head. I downloaded your album and I play it on my mp3 all the time. Anyway, I wish to extend my deepest sympathies to you and your family on the loss of your father. He sounds like a great man. God bless you. Deacon Hector Raymond...BTW, I grew up in Old Town and went to OTHS.
Seton Parish, Pickerington, OH 43147. Please say hi to Fr. Labbe. Note, if this is not the singer, please disregard the song part. I still send you my blessings.
