Age 79, of Hampton, dedicated and loving husband, father, and grandfather went to be with our Lord on Saturday, September 6, 2014. Born to Isidore Mlecko and Katherine (Bendis) Mlecko in Chicago, Lawrence attended Northwestern University as an Evans Scholar and the University of Illinois Medical School. Lawrence's medical training took place at Illinois Central Hospital, Allegheny General Hospital, and the Cleveland Clinic where he was a fellow in Gastroenterology. As a physician in private practice for 42 years, he worked in the communities served by Allegheny General Hospital, North Hills Passavant Hospital, and Bellevue Suburban General Hospital. Lawrence was a fellow in the American College of Physicians, American College of Gastroenterology, and belonged to the Allegheny County Medical Society, Pennsylvania Medical Society, and American Medical Association. He also belonged to the American Gastroenterology Association and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. He served as President of the Professional Staff at North Hills Passavant Hospital. As a Captain in the United States Army, Lawrence was stationed at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, and Fort Belvoir, Virginia. He was an avid golfer and a long-time member of Wildwood Golf Club. He is survived by his wife, Gail Laska Mlecko, his children, Sarah Peters (John), Lawrence Mlecko, Jr., Michael Mlecko (Anne), Ruth Bence (Steve), Matthew Mlecko (Heather), Peter Mlecko (Melissa); stepchildren, Marianne Behrens (Tom), John Laska, and Larry Laska, Jr.; 19 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; along with numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by two brothers, Raymond Mlecko of Chicago and Joel Mlecko of Pittsburgh. Lawrence was preceded in death by his first wife, Luanne Campbell Mlecko; and his daughter, Mary Francis Mlecko. Lawrence will be deeply missed by all. Friends received Tuesday 12 p.m. - 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. at GEORGE A. THOMA FUNERAL HOME, INC., 10418 Perry Highway, Wexford. Mass of Christian Burial Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Alexis Church, Wexford. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Little Sisters of the Poor, 1028 Benton Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15212, or Family Hospice and Palliative Care, 50 Moffett St., Pittsburgh, PA 15243, to the attention of Lynn Helbing Strinek.
