Lawrence Ogden Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 27 to Nov. 1, 2015.
Ogden, Lawrence 11/9/1919 - 10/22/2015 Chelsea Lawrence Ogden of Chelsea, MI died October 22, 2015, 18 days short of his 96th birthday. The oldest of three children, he was born to Lawrence Beldon Ogden and Ruth Montgomery Ogden on November 9, 1919 in Maryville, MO. He spent 18 days short of six years in the U.S. Army in WWII in field artillery and signal corps, achieving the rank of Captain and earning four Bronze Stars for his time in service. He then returned to school, receiving degrees in Geology; a B.S. from University of Tulsa in 1948 and an M.S. from University of Wisconsin/Madison in 1950. After one year as a Geologist with Continental Oil Company, he suffered one year teaching high school math in Idaho Springs, CO. He then became an instructor at Colorado School of Mines where he received his D.S. in Geology in 1958 and continued to teach at Mines until 1963. While at the School of Mines he did extensive summer geological field work, individual projects in most of the western states for engineering firms, oil companies and governmental agencies, which included determining the location for NORAD. He was recruited to EMU in 1963 from which he retired in 1989. Off campus in Michigan he enjoyed traveling with his family in the western states and Europe, reading mysteries and counted cross-stitching mostly local, colorful birds which he designed and stitched. He will be remembered for his cryptic observations and one line zingers. "One could count on stimulating, interesting and authentic interactions. He was truly that gentle spirit with a bright mind". He is survived by his daughters, both of Chelsea, Marlene Dusbiber (John) and Susan Ogden (James Lancioni); granddaughters, Caitlin Dusbiber, New Hudson, MI, Maggie Dusbiber, Mount Pleasant, SC, Mia Latour (Justin), Grand Rapids, MI and Rosa Lancioni, Fountain, CO. He was predeceased in death by two brothers and his beloved wife, Irene Proctor Ogden. Cremation has taken place and a gathering to celebrate his life will be held at the Comfort Inn in Chelsea, MI on November 8, 2015 from 1-4 pm. He was always at his best when he was at his worst.

It is good to see that professor Ogden lived to an old age and had the opportunity to enjoy his retirement.

I was a student of his in the last Geology of Construction Class he taught in 1989. He was a very wise man with plenty of experience and knowledge...

It was sad that he was pretty much forced into retirement at age 70 because of state age limitations. Our class was small; after hearing the news of his pending retirement we decided to throw him a retirement party. So after the final exam, I brought in a couple of bottles of champagne and plastic glasses... when the last student finished the exam we broke out the bubbly- there was a moment of surprise, and probably a tear in the corner of his eye. We toasted his accomplishments and thanked him for sharing his knowledge and experiences with us.

Exam grades were going to be posted in a couple days on his office door. When we went back to check, he wrote on the page-
"Everyone in the class passed the exam with an A, thanks to the extra credit."

Thank you professor Ogden, you were a part of the greatest generation. May the knowledge and wisdom you passed on continue to be handed down, and may it benefit many future generations.

Larry was largely responsible for hiring me to become a member of the Georaphy and Geology Dept at EMU in 1965. For every one of the 24 years we worked to together I appreciated having him as a colleague and thought of him as my mentor in the best sense of the word. Hardly a day went by that he didn't in someway help me to be a better teacher. I thought of Larry and Irene not only as best friends but also as two of the the best and most decent people I've ever known. I can't begin to find words that will say how much I'll miss them.
