Lawrence Schwartz, M.D. Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 3, 2023.
Lawrence H. Schwartz, M.D., age 98, passed away in Seattle, Washington on May 26, 2023 following a severe stoke. He was preceded in death by his parents Esther and Nathan Schwartz and his son, Joel Schwartz. Larry is survived by his sister, Ruth Brownstein, his loving wife, Jacqueline Schwartz, his daughter, Karen Cooper (husband Dean) and son, David Schwartz (wife Dulce), his step-daughter, Michelle Backer and stepson, Mark Swofford, as well as six grandchildren and one great grandchild. Larry was devoted to and a proud father of his blended family.

Larry graduated from Central High School in Detroit, Michigan in 1941 and entered basic training in 1942. After basic training he was sent to Hope College in Holland, Michigan before being recruited for dental school at the University of Michigan. A third transfer sent Larry to Duke School of Medicine. He graduated in 1949 and enrolled in a psychiatric residency at the Topeka Institute for Psychoanalysis, a newly formed branch of The Menninger Clinic dedicated to applying psychoanalytic ideas to hospital treatment of the mentally ill.

After completing his training in Topeka, Larry moved to the Pinel Foundation Psychiatric Hospital, in Shoreline, WA with his first wife, Jane, in 1952. Upon completion of his residency at Pinel, Larry established a private practice in Seattle and completed psychoanalytic training. He was dedicated to psychoanalysis and the Seattle Psychoanalytic Institute (now the Seattle Psychoanalytic Society and Institute). He trained and supervised numerous students, served as Director of the Institute for eight years, and was co-author of two medical texts: "The Psychodynamics of Patient Care: A Life Cycle Approach" and "Vulnerable Infants-a Psychological Dilemma." Colleagues, patients, and students appreciated Larry's intelligence, experience, unpretentious approach and easy-going manner.

In addition to family and work, Larry enjoyed many other pursuits. Music filled his life. He played the saxophone as a young adult but switched to the clarinet for the remainder of his life. Larry, along with Molly Bernard and Robert Ingalls, formed the Lamoro Trio which performed in a variety of venues. He was an avid reader, was interested in all forms of fine art, enjoyed traveling in the U.S. and abroad, and was especially enthusiastic about trying new foods discovered on his many travels with Jackie.

Larry's family thanks the Kenney senior living staff Care-at-Home caregivers for all they did for Larry and also for the family in the last years of his life.

I have been thinking of Dr. Schwartz (Larry) nearly every week and kept meaning to figure out how to get in touch with him. I entered analysis with him in the early 80s for 8 years. It was very old school and very helpful. As was mentioned in his obituary he was a down to earth person. I frequently went to psychoanalytic lectures where he was in attendance. I got a chance to see how he interacted in such a friendly way with social worker colleagues of mine. He was just a good guy. When he asked a question of the presenter, it was straightforward and not proceeded with a long exposition to somehow convey how smart he was. And he was!

Many years after analysis in my mid 60's I went back to see Larry for therapy--sitting up, face to face. Occasionally we just chatted; he even shared a few things about his life....and because he knew and remembered me so well, despite many years and patients in-between, he would zoom in with a laser like comment--that pierced and moved me--so "right on."

So I miss him, and have missed him. Yet he lives always in me. And to you, "Larry, I just want you to know I'm ok, way better than ok, now nearly 77. I have been coming more into my own and experience more joy and satisfaction in living...and I'm still working nearly full time with social work teaching and chairing the Board of a 125 year old family business--and what better training for this--psychoanalytic social work! I have taken up piano and organ playing and fill-in at my church."

So dear Larry, "May the Lord bless and keep you; the Lord make his face shine upon you, and be gracious to you; may the Lord lift his countenance upon you, and grant you peace."

My deepest condolences to all his family.
