Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 6, 2021.
MULLINGS--Leith P., Distinguished Professor Emerita, the Graduate Center of CUNY, passed away on December 13, 2020. Dr. Mullings was born on April 8, 1945 in Jamaica, W.I. and brought to New York City at the age of three by her parents, Hubert and Lillieth Mullings. She was educated in the New York City public school system, attended Queens College, graduated from Cornell /New York Hospital School of Nursing, and went on to receive her Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Chicago. Dr. Mullings was a scholar, who leaves a body of work on the foundations of racial and class oppression and the intersectionality of race, class and gender. Above all, she was an activist and public intellectual who worked tirelessly to combat racism and all forms of social inequality, locally and globally. She mentored, worked with and inspired a generation of scholars and activists who will carry forward her work. She was preceded in death by her husband, the historian and public intellectual, Manning Marable. Beloved mother, grandmother, sister and aunt, she is survived by her children, Alia and Michael Tyner, granddaughter Lillieth Tyner, siblings Paul, Pauline and Pansy (the triplets) and Sandra Mullings, nephew Christopher Nova, nieces Candice Williams, Danielle Mullings and Adriana Nova and stepchildren Colby Tyner, Malaika Marable Serrano, Sojourner Marable Grimmett and Joshua Marable. For those seeking a way to honor her, consider donating to one of the many organizations she supported, including The Movement for Black Lives, Southern Poverty Law Center, NAACP Legal Defense Fund and Doctors Without Borders.

Professor Mullings was my dissertation advisor when I began my doctoral studies at Yale University in 1973. She was a mentor, a friend and an eternal inspiration. Her passing has transformed my world. This material world will never be the same again.
