I was deeply saddened to hear about his passing. Please accept my heartfelt condolences.
Met Leo in high school, while all the other Navajo students spoke with broken English, this guy was rattling off English words at ease. He easily made friends with non Navajo students, the rest of us , we were quite and shy. One time we were riding the bus, and there was Leo walking with the white girls down the street. You could tell he was telling a story and the girls were laughing. I knew then this guy was truly special-kind, intelligent, and full of integrity. He wasn´t just a great friend; he was the kind of person who left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
I still remember how warmly Leo´s family welcomed mine in NM. That kind of generosity stays with a person. Even though it´s been a long time since we last saw each other, we did speak, and I´m grateful for that. He was so happy about his family in Texas. I would always ask about military secrets and aliens, but he would not say a word, but he smiled. I knew he had classified information.
I remember the rodeos, boxing, skiing in Bayfield and Durango and fire fighting in the summer. He worked in Wyoming, I worked in Utah. Back then money was hard to find, but we worked for it. One time a bull took out his teeth at a rodeo. He also did bareback and saddle bronco at rodeos. I remember the mornings at Ignacio, listening to Billy "Crash" Craddock, Don Williams and other artist as we joked and talked and drank coffee. One time we hitched hike from Ignacio Co to Shiprock NM just to attend the rodeo. He also played in a band, and they were singing "Who Stop The Rain" by CCR. After high school was over, he went to Utah, I also did. We lost track after we started our own family.
I want you to know that Leo spoke with kindness and pride about his family. I´m sure he was a wonderful parent, and I hope you find comfort in knowing how admired and respected he was by those who knew him throughout life.
Wishing you strength and peace in this difficult time. Your family had a truly good soul in your midst. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
With sympathy and respect,
Gilbert H Willie
