Leo Beus Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 16 to Nov. 18, 2022.
Leo Ray Beus, age 78, of Tempe, Arizona, passed away on November 14, 2022, after enduring ongoing health issues.

Leo was born on December 23, 1943, to Anna May West and Ersel Hill Beus in Burley, Idaho. He was the youngest of four children, West, Olive, and Rodney. Leo came from a farming family, spending most of his childhood years in Nyssa, Oregon and Othello, Washington working on the family farm. His father taught him the value of engaging in and enjoying work. This made a lasting impression on him throughout his life. He attended high school in Othello, Washington, graduating in 1962. Leo served as student body president and captain of the football team.

Leo attended Brigham Young University for one semester before serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Netherlands. Upon his arrival home, Leo returned to BYU in the fall of 1965 on a full academic scholarship. It was early in his life that Leo decided farming was not for him, and "with or without wisdom," decided to become a lawyer!

While at BYU, Leo served as a student body officer and on the debate team with Paul Gilbert as his debate partner. In November of that year, Leo was set up by his cousin on a blind date with Annette Rowland. They married in the Salt Lake City Temple on April 5, 1967. Leo graduated from BYU in 1967 and entered law school at the University of Michigan in the fall of that same year. He graduated from law school in 1970. Leo and Annette became the parents of four children, Michael Shane, Lindsey, Patrick Shannon and Ryan David.

Following law school, Phoenix, Arizona became the new home for the Beus family as Leo joined the law firm of Jennings, Strouss and Salmon. In 1982, Paul Gilbert and Leo joined forces to start their own firm-Beus Gilbert, Wake, & Morrill PLLC. In 2018 Patrick J. McGroder III joined the firm as a name partner. The name of the firm is now Beus Gilbert McGroder PLLC. Leo loved his practice of law and excelled in his profession.

Equal to his love of law, Leo loved missionary work. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving twice as a bishop, once as bishop of young single adults in the Tempe Towne Lake Ward and again, as bishop of mid-single adults in the Tempe Single Adult Ward. He and Annette mentored hundreds of members of these wards for many years and loved every one of them.

In his later years, Arizona State University became one of Leo's passions. He fully embraced their vision for education for all, regardless of race or faith. Leo would often be seen at a sporting event or working to raise funds for various needs on campus. His involvement with ASU was a highlight in Leo's life.

Leo is survived by his wife, Annette Rowland Beus, and their four children, Michael Shane Beus, Lindsey Beus Worthen (Britton), Patrick Shannon Beus, Ryan David Beus (Megan) and their 16 grandchildren, Sadie Beus Wold (Tanner), Abby Beus, Michael Tanner Beus, Rowland Cole Beus, Aubrey Worthen Gibbons (Brayden), Chloe' Worthen Rouse (Blake), Benton Michael Worthen, Leo Maxwell Worthen, Preston Mavity Worthen, Kaytee Beus, Samantha Beus, Scout Beus, George Stanley Beus, Winston Oscar Beus, Solomon Fred Beus, and Jacob Bibi Beus.

Services for Leo Ray Beus will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2707 S. College Avenue, Tempe, Arizona 85282, on Saturday, November 19, 2022, at 10:00 A.M. A viewing will be held at the same location on Friday, November 18, 2022, from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you pick up someone's tab in honor of Leo.

A number of years ago I worked as a court reporter on a gigantic national case with Leo for several years. Working with lawyers every day for years, I knew there was something very special about him from our very first deposition. By the end of the case I dubbed him "the best lawyer I had ever worked with and known." His knowledge, his manner, his work ethic, his competitiveness, his spirit and his humanity made him someone I will remember forever. Leo was a great human being gone far too soon! My deepest sympathy to his family.

My family has been friends with and associated with the Leo Beus family for 40+ years. Most of my fond childhood memories involved him and his family. He was there to help with adoption of my younger brother. He was there for scout activities. He was there to kick our butts in basketball. His lessons in Sunday school were Oscar winning extended directors cut edition. When he talked with you, you had his full attention. He´s a wonderful man who will be missed.

I remember Leo from the day I graduated Law School and moved to Phoenix in 1976. Leo was a great friend and mentor the entire time I know him. He was a kind man but a beast in the courtroom. May he Rest In Peace.

With really great sadness I learned that Leo had passed away on Monday. He was the kindest, smartest and most caring person I have ever met. I still remember -as it was yesterday- when I met Leo for the first time by chance on a flight from Phoenix to Los Angeles, where we sat together. Leo, after learning that I am a professor at ASU, asked me about new strategies for student success and my research. He was so enthusiastic to learn about our work, where we aim to build the world´s first compact X-ray Free Electron Laser, the CXFEL, at ASU. This accelerator will allow us to revolutionize science by making molecular movies of biological processes "in action". Leo and Annette became real friends of our team at the Biodesign Institute and made an extremely generous donation that allowed us to build the instrument, which now nears completion. His brave heart has stopped beating but his legacy will live on forever in our hearts and the Beus CXFEL Laboratories, enabling new discoveries that will lead to breakthrough developments of novel drugs against human diseases including cancer. Leo, we miss you so much but I am sure that you will be there for your wife Annette, your family and friends when we need you and that you will follow our progress from the other world you are now in.

Find memories of the Beuses in 25th and Arcadia Ward. Enjoyed his stories while canning at the churches cannery on occasions. He was a fine person. This world needs more like him. Best to Annette and family. It may be that we are cousins through the Child's of Clinton, Utah, a farming community.

To describe Leo as being highly motivated, unusually intelligent, extremely generous, amazing work ethic, competitive, extremely loyal, still significantly understated his qualities. In addition, he has always been a dedicated and humble follower of Jesus Christ´s gospel. Leo and Annette´s life achievements, services, and sacrifices for others far exceeds my ability to describe. Growing up with Leo on the farm, he was always my standard. A cousin, Leo was more like a brother. Lifelong memories of his mentoring, encouraging me to run faster, work harder, and aim higher. He has always been there to help me across challenges, always loyal and eager to help. His encouragement, counsel, and example play an important part in our entire family´s life. Leo and Annette, his equal partner, are shining examples to us and our children and their spouses, a model they work hard to follow. Thanks Leo, for a life so well lived, for the example that you and Annette have set. We ask the Lord to comfort Annette and the family during his time of grief.

I first met Leo as an opposing counsel and it was like having two bulls in a China shop. He then became a lifelong friend. Leo had few equals. Clients were fortunate to have him represent them and lawyers like me blessed to have worked with him Steve Silvet

We love Leo and the Beus family. We know he is already hard at work on the other side. I´ll never forget one of the first lessons I learned from him shortly after moving into the Town Lake Ward. I asked him when he planned on retiring. His answer came as a shock but profoundly inspired me all the same. He said "never, the minute you stop working is the minute you start dying". I took this as a lesson to always keep myself mentally and actively engaged in something productive, whether that be a hobby, a church calling, self-improvement, study, or a job. I´m grateful for his example and all of the positivity he brought into this life. He leaves behind a legacy that few will match and we are proud to have known him. - the Jeff and Annie Webb family.

To the Beus family we are deeply sad to learn of the loss of such a great man Mr. Beus was a titan of a man who did many great things but he also had a kind heart. I will never forget coming to his office for a legal conference his presence so intimidating I couldn't speak the attorney online was trying to give the facts impeding the progress of the case he was so passionate about his work he slammed his fist down on the desk in an effort to have me bring forward the facts. I began to cry and he said " maybe I'm being too hard" and he handed me a tissue. He had a soft side one of a father like figure I admired him . Mr. Beus is a loss to all that worked with him and those in his community. You will be greatly missed and always remembered.
