Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 16, 2018.
Leo Edward Cahill age 89, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday evening February 15, 2018. He was born on July 30, 1928 in Utica, Illinois to Dennis James Cahill and Catherine Cahill (Coleman). He attended the University of Illinois on a football scholarship and appeared as a player in the 1947 Rose Bowl. After leaving college, Mr. Cahill served in the United States Army during the Korean War.
After stints as an assistant coach on the college circuit in the United States, Mr. Cahill began his Canadian Football League career in the 1960s as an assistant coach with the Montreal Alouettes before moving to Toronto with the then Toronto Rifles of the Continental Football League. He was appointed head coach of the Toronto Argonauts in 1967, retaining the position until 1972, returning again in the 1977 and 1978 seasons. He would later serve as General Manager for the team from 1986 to 1988.
In between Argos engagements Mr. Cahill was hired as General Manager of the Toronto Northmen of the World Football League. The Northmen never played a game in Toronto, Federal Government Intervention banned them from playing there, and the team was moved to Memphis, Tennessee and re-named the Memphis Southmen.
From 2004 onward, Mr. Cahill served as goodwill ambassador for the Argonauts. He also served as a color commentator for CFL telecasts on CBC between 1981 and 1985. He was inducted into the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame in 2013 in recognition of his contributions to the Argonauts franchise.
A Sandy Springs resident for the past five years Mr. Cahill enjoyed daily walks and Sunday dinners with his family.
He was preceded in death by his three brothers Donald Cahill, Francis Cahill and Joseph Cahill, a granddaughter Theresa Mary Khouri (O'Bryant) and nephew Dennis Cahill. He is survived by five children, Steve Cahill of Woodstock, Georgia and Terry Cahill, Christy Aldridge, Lisa Miller (Marty) and Bettye Nissim (Sasson) all of Sandy Springs, Georgia. Grandchildren Michael Aldridge of Boise, Idaho, Mary (Aldridge) Tapp , Patrick Murray, Rebecca Rose, David Nissim and Joey Nissim all of Sandy Springs, Georgia and Alexandra (Rose) Daquino (John) of Los Angeles, California. Great grandchildren John Talley, Lilly Talley and Sarah Tapp of Sandy Springs, Georgia. Nieces, Catherine Rosen (Rick) of Utica, Illinois, Anne Hayburn (Bill) of Santa Ana, California, Sue Johnson (Dave) of Barrington, Illinois, and Jane Barth (Brian) of Austin, Texas, and nephews, Patrick Cahill (Jane) of Winnetka, Illinois, Joseph Cahill (Jayne) of Geneva, Illinois, and John Cahill (Jackie) of Coral Springs, Florida . Sister-in-law Mary Lou Cahill of Dekalb, Illinois and many loyal friends and fans throughout the United States and Canada.
A funeral mass will be held at 1 pm on Thursday, February 22, 2018, at St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church, 7171 Glenridge Drive, Sandy Springs, GA 30328. Reception to follow at his daughter's home in Sandy Springs. Donations may be made in Mr. Cahill's name to the American Lung Association.

Rest in Peace Leo Cahill. I remember watching
you run the Toronto Argonauts in the 1970's
while I was in high school growing up in Montreal. Rivalry between the Argos and Alouettes grew as between two great coaches: you and Marv Levy. You helped make the CFL big time at the time you coached. Crowds were bigger; 40,000 - 50,000 in the seats and salaries were higher than the NFL. Players and coaches were stars around town. You were a pretty good broadcaster, too. You kind of reminded me of actor Ned Beaty. Anyone who only knew of Leo Cahill in retirement should watch some YouTube video of him coach the Argonauts in the 1970's. Pest in Peace in coach Heaven.

I am very late but this needs to be said. I played for Leo when he coached Toronto Rifles in its first year. My father past away suddenly that summer and Leo took the time to come and pay his respects. It was an appreciated gesture, remembered to this day, and if it had been possible I would have paid my respects in person at the time of his passing. He took time for the important things in life.

During my six-year (1976-81) front office tenure with the Argos and then six years (1981-86) with the C.F.L. I had the pleasure of getting to know Leo Cahill so very well. His unique persona rang true with players, executives, fans and members of the media alike. Leo's great judge of character and charismatic charm made him thousands of true and loyal friends and associates. Coach--wonderful memories of you keep flooding back in my mind bringing a smile to my face and warmth into my heart. You will never be forgotten. R.I.P.

I am very sad to have to realize the loss of one of the 3 heroes in my life. I had the honour of meeting Leo in the mid 80's and having our paths cross over the next few years as a result of the passion we shared, The Toronto Argonauts. He always managed to have the time for me, this magical combination of patience and foresight tempered by intelligence, guts, and the natural ability to cross lines and crush borders way before thinking outside the box was a thing. He brought the best out in me, and inspired me to be better.
I would like to thank the Cahill family for sharing him with us. We loved him then, and love him now. What a gift!

What an honor and privilege to know Leo Cahill. He was an amazing man and leaves an incredible legacy of family and the thousands of players and coaches whose lives he enriched with his Incredible charisma and leadership. His legacy will live on with his family and especially his granddaughter Rebecca who loved him so much and is the living embodiment of his charisma and charm. I will never forget meeting him for the first time on St. Pattys Day March of 2015 and he shared the story of how he engineered the signing of Czonka, Kiick and Warfield away from the Miami Dolphins the 2 time super bowl champs at the time and my favorite team...to the World Football League! I cried for two weeks as a young boy! And when I
Met the man behind that scheme...I couldnt help but love him! What a wonderful soul! God is certainly laughing today as Leo holds court at the pearly gates. God Bless you Leo and your family.

I was saddened to hear of the passing of Leo Cahill. As a young teenager growing up in Toronto in the early 70's I was a friend of the Cahill family. He may have been a larger than life national celebrity but to me he was was friends' father. He extended to me warmth, kindest and generosity and made an impression on a young man that lasts to this day. My condolences to his family. Rest in peace Mr Cahill.

I knew Leo when he coached the Argos during the late 70s and I was a rookie reporter. He was smart, funny and, most of all, had a heart of gold. May Leo's family take comfort in remembering the good times and the great man he was.
