Leo Major is a very special man for us all. Going alone to Zwolle, knowing his friend Willy Arsenault was killed by German fire, was an act of great importance for the city of Zwolle. Leo, on behalve of my parents and the rest of my family, thank you very much!

In a farwell to Leo Major we celebrate his life as a soldier who believed in and almost died for the liberation of Europe and my city Zwolle. When I saw him enter my beloved city in 1945, I was 12 years old and he became my instant hero.To the family and friends of this fine human being I express my deep sorrow.

Dear Major Family,
We offer our condolences with the loss of Mr. Leo Major, who is credited with the liberation of our hometown Zwolle in the Netherlands on April 14, 1945 while he was a soldier in the Canadian army.
We are very grateful for Mr. Major's efforts and his comrades in arms who were willing to give their lives in order that we could be freed from the most terrible Nazi regime.
We will always remember with gratitude what Mr. Major and his comrades did for us.
Sincerely, John and Ann Kassies, who were 9 years old when Zwolle was liberated and who immigrated to Ontario the mid fifties and now live in Stouffville, On.

You grew up in Montreal, you battled your way through Western Europe until you stood alone in front of the gates of the City of Zwolle from where you chased the Nazis back to their pulverized country.....You showed courage and resolve to liberate us from oppression. Thank you, Leo Major. May you rest in peace forever more, Nic and Jane Veenhof.

Leo Major was the first Canadian soldier I, boy of 14, saw, on april 14, 1945, and with him came the freedom from 5 years of Nazi-dictatorship. I then of course did know anything about him, but his appearance was the beginning of a new life for all of us.

Since we shared a unique bound together, we had the privilege to know each other as men , not only as father and son.
I will never forget what he told me in his last moment. I was, and I am still proud of him. He was a hero. He was my hero.
Léo, I will never forget you.
