Leo McKernan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 3, 2024.
Leo Joseph McKernan, an accomplished business leader, proud father, grandfather, great-grandfather and US Veteran passed away on Wednesday, August 28, 2024 at the age of 86.

Born on February 17, 1938 in Philadelphia, PA, to Leo and Mary McKernan, Leo was the beloved brother of Mary Patricia McKernan and Jeanne McKernan Kiernan (Bill) and devoted father of Kim Thomas (Roland), Jennifer Freeman (Andy), and LeAnne Suppinger. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren Dever Thomas, Tara Clark (Billy), Ryan Thomas, Erin Thomas, Katlyn Freeman, Jane Freeman; and great-grandchildren, Leo Clark, Charlie Clark, and Rowan Thomas. Leo was married previously to Gail McKernan (Ryan) and Kathleen McKernan (Bibler).

Leo attended St. Joseph's Preparatory High School in Philadelphia, PA and Iona College in New Rochelle, NY before serving as a Sergeant in the US Army. After his military service, he had a successful business career, mostly at Clark Equipment in South Bend, Indiana, leading as Chairman and CEO. After retiring, Leo split his time between Naples, Florida and South Bend, Indiana.

Those who knew him were aware of his love for history and country, his incredibly generous spirit, passion for planning the next adventure and reading his family the daily comics. He will be deeply missed by all who loved him.

A private, family celebration of Leo's life will be held this Fall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Spondylitis Association of America, reflecting his commitment to helping his family.

Leo was a dear friend of my husband (Bob) and I and his friendship was steadfast after Bob's passing. I will remember Leo as a kind and generous soul with a heart of gold. RIP

Seeing Leo walking the hallway at the old Clark office in Buchanan completely lost in thought and unaware of anyone being around him
