McVICKER, Leo J.

Leo J. McVicker was born in Malden Massachusetts on March 17, 1929. He passed away peacefully on August 12, 2013 at The Waterford Health Center in Juno Beach Florida after a long illness. He was 84 years old. The arc of Mr. McVicker's long life described what we have come to consider a true American success story. Born just months before the collapse of the Stock Market triggered the Great Depression his early years were marked by economic hardship and the same historic challenges most of his countrymen faced on a daily basis. Educated at Malden Catholic High School he served in Japan as an Army medic in 1945 before taking advantage of the G.I. Bill and continuing his education at St. John's Preparatory School in Danvers Massachusetts and then at Boston University. While at B.U. Mr. McVicker met the love of his life, Miss Ernestine A. Dube of Fort Kent, Maine, who was studying voice at the Boston Conservatory of Music. They were married June 23, 1951. After moving to Wilmington, Massachusetts, Mr. McVicker launched what would become a remarkably successful career with the American Hardware Mutual Insurance Company, where he would work until he retired, 38 years later, in 1995. He and Ernestine raised three children: Robert Leo, Marie Jeanne, and Katherine. Robert, of Amesbury, Massachusetts and Katherine Hoffmann, of Reading, Massachusetts survive their beloved father, as does his adored wife Ernestine, who currently resides in Juno Beach. Marie Jeanne, of North Palm Beach, tragically passed away 8.21.12. Mr. McVicker was a world traveler, a student of world history, a voracious reader, and a renowned storyteller. He was active in the Big Brother program, the Catholic Church, Rotary, and constantly involved in numerous volunteer charity activities. Mr. McVicker is also survived by son-in-law Gregory M. Mundie of North Palm Beach, Fl. (husband of Marie Jeanne) and daughter-in-law Kathleen H. McVicker of Amesbury, Ma. (Wife of Robert). Grandchildren are Zachary William McVicker, Marisa Ruth McVicker, Rachel Marie Hoffmann, Julia Christina Hoffmann, Colin Gregory Mundie, and Evan Andrew Mundie. Other surviving relatives are brother-in-law Lionel Dube of Reading, Ma. sister-in-law Bernadette Levasseur of Caribou, Me. and various nieces and nephews. Mr. McVicker was pre-deceased by his mother, Marie T. McVicker, and his brother, Robert N. McVicker. There will be a Mass celebrated at St. Paul of the Cross, 10970 State Rd. A1A, North Palm Beach, Fl. 33408 on Friday at 11:00 a.m. There will be no calling hours.
