Uncle Leon was a "Gentle Giant", kind, generous and very talented. Many of us in his family posses very cool woven stools that he created in his retirement years,(he gave me what he called "the wild one" all done in red and black) I am also very proud to have 2 chairs from the old Lange farm on which he redid the cane seats. We all have fond memeories of family reunions he organized at the lake at the Sportsman's Club. I remember hours "playing" the organ in Uncle Leon's and Aunt Margarets home while they and my parents played pinochle. I was glad to visit Uncle Leon in recent years and enjoyed his birdfeeder outside his window.

He is now in the company of all his brothers and sisters, he was the last of our Bennett aunts and uncles to pass on to Heaven's Gate. Unfortunatley I could not make it up for his memorial services, but his memory and the sound of his deep voice will always be with me.

My condolences to Leon's family. I will never forget what a kind gentleman Leon was, and his presence made the Sportsme's Club a better place.

My family would like to thank everyone involved in the service for my father, Leon, at the Union Presbyterian Church. The service was exceptional thanks to Rev. Tuttle. The Elders, Deacons & staff of the Church went above & beyond in helping with the reception after the service. Thank you to all who came to the church to pay your respects to Leon. Your warmth & good wishes certainly do consol us in this difficult time. We were so grateful to have a father who was such a kind man, friend & mentor in our lives. May he rest in peace & join his wife in eternal life.

I will always miss,

Catching sunfish for the first time, and the back of your shirt once.

Saying my prayers with you, then not being able to sleep knowing we were going fishing in the morning.

Playing pinochle with you and grandmom.

Tomato sandwiches.

Catching more flounder than you could count, and staying up all night cleaning and fileting them,

Going out late to collect worms after it rained, to stock the worm farm in the cellar.

Watching you make something beautiful from some wood you had collected.

The telephone intercom you built from the garage to the kitchen.

The rack you made to store your nuts and bolts.

More fishing gear than I'd ever seen, still.

Watching you dangle two flounder rods off the back of the boat, all the while cracking mussels for chum and clearing the tangle in my line.

Placing crabapple on the deerpaths(forgive me for that)

Joking with Uncle Herald about Birdseye.

Helping a very embarrassed boy with a deertick.

Being there to help, many times. and with the best advice.

Most of all your sense of humor, and someone I always have and always will love, respect and look up to.

With all my love

Michael

P.S.

Wish I could have been there, but I know you knew that.

To Mr. Bennett's Family- I was deeply saddened by the news of Leon's passing. I am a deacon for Union Presbyterian Church. This was to be the week that I was to visit with him and I looked forward to each one, sometimes even visiting him during the month even if it wasn't mine "week". We always had very informative visits, I think I know everything about the local bird population as well as fishing in Salem County. I learned alot about life in general also, he gave me advice which was "always" correct. I will miss his bright eyes and positive attitude. May God Bless and comfort all of you at this most difficult time.

Grandpop was always there to offer a hand to anyone, usually before they even asked. I don't think I have ever met anyone as skilled in so many completely different things.

I remember playing Pinochle with Grandmom and Grandpop. I remember the way he laughed, "Woooo". He was always eager to smile.

All kinds of cliches come to mind, but when used to describe Grandpop, they are accurate. They don't make them like that anymore" is one of them. Just don't hear of people doing a job with one company for 36 years. He hunted, fished, loved wildlife and gardening, played Bridge and Pinochle, Grew beautiful roses and other flowers, could take almost anything mechanical and fix it. He refinished furniture that anyone would describe as trash and make it look like a priceless antique.

He will be missed by the countless friends, church members, neighbors and relatives. He was one of a kind.

Dear Grandpop:

I am ever so grateful for the opportunity to be a part of your life. You were the sweetest, kindest and most dear man (just short of my own grandfather). You know, Mike was never really jealous about you being my "other boyfriend". He really kind of got a kick out of it.

I know you are with your Lord in heaven. Please say hi to my Dad and my grandparents for me.

Dear Uncle Leon,

I wish we could be there one last time to see you off on your way to a better place. Give my Mom & Dad a big kiss for me when you see them in Heaven.

Uncle Leon, we will miss your kind and gentle ways and all your remembrances from "the good old days". I'm sure there will be a lot more flowers in Heaven's garden now. Look down and smile on us.

Love,

Betsy & Jack
