Leon Gambino Obituary

Published by The New Orleans Advocate from Mar. 13 to Mar. 17, 2017.
Leon Salvador Gambino (Daddy, Pop, Pops, Paw, Bubba) of Metairie, LA died on Saturday, March 11, 2017 at 94 ½ years of age. He was born in New Orleans, LA on August 6, 1922 to the late Frank and Amelia Gambino. He was the brother of Elroy Gambino and the late Frank Gambino; faithful husband of the late Audrey LaPlace Gambino who died in 1998 and father of Judy Gambino, Wayne Brown (Suzanne) and the late Bill Brown who died in 2002. He is also survived by a daughter-in-law, Linda Brown and seven grandchildren along with their children. Leon attended schools in New Orleans until joining the U.S. Navy in 1942, serving during WW II aboard the troop transporter U.S.S. Admiral Benson until being discharged in 1946. He loved sports, playing baseball in High School and semi-professional baseball and boxing while aboard ship. After his military service, Leon worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as a civilian but still under military command. He retired from that service in 1982. Our Dad consistently extended loving kindness to those around him and exemplified God's design of a husband who is to love your wife, "as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her…" - what a legacy to leave behind for your children, grandchildren, extended family and friends. Thank you Lord! The Gambino family is grateful to Dad's lifelong friends, his family members and the family of believers in Christ who loved on Pop so much and so well. A Funeral Service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 15, 2017 at Garden of Memories Funeral Home, 4900 Airline Drive in Metairie, LA. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be in Garden of Memories Cemetery. The online guestbook is available is at www.gardenofmemoriesmetairie.com.

I had the privilege of knowing Mr. Gambino. What I remember most is his gentle demeanor, warm/welcoming smile and down to earth personality. He will be greatly missed by many. May his family find comfort in the beautiful memories they have of "pops".

Mr Gambino was a wonderful, kind and very gentle man. He was the type of person who would do anything for anyone to help them in any way. He was much more than just a neighbor to Ann and I -- he was a great friend. We sure will miss him. Our prayers are with his family always-- take comfort in knowing that Mr Gambino has seen the face of the Lord. May he rest in the arms of our loving Saviour for eternity.
